Hole pulling a stump I snapped the dipper cylinder rod. I brought it to a hydraulic shop and they repelled a new rod to the knuckle. After reinstalling it the bucket does not close fully (piston fully extended). Fully extended the rod measures 17 1/4”. Should the rod be coming out further or can it be another issue? Thankyou

Welcome to TBN!

Perhaps the bucket rod is bent.

I have no idea what 'repelled it means' but I suspect they cut and squared the end of the rod prior to welding the knuckle back on or they used a shorter rod, hence your travel range is now shorter.

OP talks about the dipper rod breaking and then the bucket cylinder not retracting after repair of the dipper rod. The measurement of the rod, not sure if this means the repaired rod or the bucket rod, but again, assume the bucket rod, doesn't add to the picture.

In reality, most all tractor mount back hoe's aren't meant to pull stumps, they are meant for digging dirt and limited debris in the trench.

Of course human nature tends to cause owners to exceed the capabilities of them and then stuff fails. The primary reason I don't own one actually. I consider a tractor mounted backhoe to be one of the most expensive and useless attachments anyone can buy. If I require any digging to be done, I rent a mini-ex. While they cost a bit to rent, you are absolved of any upkeep or incurred damage for the most part.

The Kubota dealership I work at part time... It seems like every customer that purchases a new tractor wants a backhoe attachment and the owner tries to discourage them but they still insist and he provides... They use it a couple times, find out how hard they are to mount and dismount and most times wind up sitting in a corner somewhere, unused collecting cobwebs.

I used to question customers on there need for a tractor mount backhoe. They are a very expensive, glorified shovel. I do like that Kubota builds small, semi-construction grade TLBs as I know several people that use them on their business to access places that they can't get any other piece of equipment into.

There is a night and day difference between a construction backhoe and a backhoe attachment. I really wish I could justify a full sized backhoe, they are so nice to use. Excavators are also much nicer than a backhoe attachment. Your description of a backhoe attachment as a "powered shovel" is exactly how I describe it too!

My Bradco 11MD is about the same specs (dimensional capability) as a Bobcat E26. The difference between them is like comparing a Ford Maverick to a F350, with the E26 being the F350. A worn out E26 is around 18K, and my worn out 1993 Bradco 11MD was 1,800 (plus 1,200 in materials for the mount and repairs). I hate being poor.

The shop most likely had to cut the rod down to put a new eye on it. You will most likely have to go to the OEM to get a replacement cylinder to restore full articulation. Digging stumps is hard on equipment. What type of machine is this on?
