Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

I love magnets around the shop. Especially the ones with hooks. Glued the little magnets on the back of my large square. Makes for easy storage and they also provide a standoff on the edge for cutting or marking. I hang shop brooms, masks, welding coat, and other misc stuff on my metal cabinets.

I saved this stuff from the scrap yard today.

1.25” octagonal aluminum tubes manufactured by TMI United. Looks
like they were part of a traction setup for hospitals.

Perhaps ultrarunner or someone else can shed more light on them.

They will make good adjustable brackets or????

We hang our fur stretchers on an old commercial kitchen rack. Your aluminum one is prettier than ours.

Swage blocks on stand. 200pounds each.

Nice Swag Blocks... I have been looking for ONE at a decent price point, something that is not out there, same as Anvils.
Found an Anvil built a stand, now to start banging hot steel.

Do you do any other Blacksmithing ?

I trying to get started in a small way for a retirement thing to do, nothing too big, small decorative pieces.

I haven’t done any smithing in years. Ideally I would like to set up a dedicated blacksmith area.

That’s a GREAT looking anvil stand. Nice touch with the wood detailing. Is the anvil a Peter Wright? How heavy ? Feel free to post some of your creations!

Thx for the offer to post my work, except I am just getting started along with the Landscaping for the new remodel ed house in SoCal... and, and ! So not am I learning but it will be a while until I get a piece worthy of posting.

The Anvil in the picture is a 1885 Peter Wright... you know your anvils; she is 162 lbs, not too big but more than enough for anything I have to do; I also have a smaller 105 lb. Vulcan, both are in decent shape.
The Stand is made Construction Site Cut-Offs, it still needs some welding to close up the end of the metal edge wrap, some stain and the Tool Rack Mounted. I built it to replace the stand that came with the PW, that was about 12 inches lower, need to save the back.

Thanks for the info, Scrambler. That PW anvil is in incredible shape. The edges look like new. What a great find!

I thought so too when I went to pick it up (look at it), the seller roller it out of the corner and told me his dad got it from his work, it sat in a corner and no one used it except for little things. The company was going to throw it out... :confused2:, the dad took it home and never used it.
Now I have it and trying to get started.

The Vulcan, although not at the top of the list, is a good anvil. I found it on Craig's List at a LosAngles Pawn Shop for around the $100.00 mark, couldn't resist with the condition, my grand daughter, 5 years old, uses it a lot to drive nails in the Lowes Kid Building Kits.

Hoping to start up the new Forge shortly, want to let it burn in from low to high temps, then see if one of my old jobs taught me anything.

Good talking to ya, Ltr...

Here’s another idea I’ve been playing with for my metal cutting horizontal bandsaw.

I drilled two 1/2” holes through the face of the fixed jaw of the vise to accommodate a matching length of angle iron.

Here’s a few examples of configurations and setups.

Before: cutting wide flat pieces is slow and hard on the blade.

After:

Better grip on round or irregular shapes

Quicker cuts by avoiding the “flats” on channel
