Back on the biggest repair topic, in 1400 hours there was a broken shifter fork, a worn-out clutch, and some damaged pto gears from trying to mow rocks. All due to operator enthusiasm (read, error). And maybe a hose and a tie-rod seal, also assisted by operator technique.

My 30 year old KF walk behind tiller's biggest damage was I managed to break a shaft to the tiller in 1975. Obtained a shaft (you could get them in then) and was surprised how easy it was to fit. Unit was in a brush fire in 1997. Plastic control knobs, oil pressure indicator melted and plastic fuel hoses caught fire and burnt off. Replaced the fuel hoses and oil pressure indicator from kubota Australia but was unable to source replacements for control knobs. Nothing major really.
My FL15020C rotary hoe had its plastic PTO covers destroyed in the same fire. I also lost a small RV90 Kubota tractor and hoe. These tractors were the predessesors to the B6000 tractors.

Whatta ya mean PTO in high range?? I have a BX. Is it ok to mow in rabbit? Or should I go to turtle?

Pardon my ignorance here, but it seems mowing is a major chore for these machines. If you can't run the PTO in high range to mow, what is high range for?

Usually on farm & utility tractors High range is used for transport mode...

On a compact, I'd assume it would be the same...

By the way, how was the ride @ 12 mph mowing a rough field with any kind of tractor... like a bucking bronco? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Please clarify here,
With a BX, I should be doing all of my mowing in the turtle (low) range transmission selector. Is that what all of you are doing? I was doing it in rabbit (that's in rabbit not like a rabbit !)

I think they're talking about the PTO speed, not the "engine"
or driving speed.

On my B7500HST, you change the PTO speed by changing
a governor or restricting plate. The instructions are on a
decal that is below the seat. It's not something that you change by pushing a lever, and you can't do it accidently.

I mow using the rabbit gear; when I bounce more than a foot
off the ground due to the ruts in the yard, I just ease up on
the pedal.

Read this post Basic's Tractor MPH & PTO useage

Depending on what you're doing, optimum is 5 mph @ PTO/eng speed... whatever that translates to on a Kubota BX, you'll have to check your owners manual...

That could be say 4th Gear in Low range, or could be 1st. Gear in High range...

Using some common sense however, if you're "brush hogging" a field with ruts and rough ground in general, you'll of course slow down so you don't rattle the fillings out of your teeth /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Some real nasty, thick stuff {5-7' high}, I'll crawl through @ 1.25 mph, so the brush hog and tractor don't "bog" down.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.I have been told by a very knowledgeable Kub. mechanic that the Hyro. trans. is designed to perform at peak efficieney when the proper range is selected and the Hydro. pedal is depressed about all the way.This lets the proper ammount of fluid pass through the trans. to insure cooling and pressure.Less stress on the engine and better fuel economy,and overall life of the trans.Will our 2710 mow in High Range? without question.But I always run in Mid Range.My wife mows with a BX2200,will it mow in Rabbit Range,of course,but she runs in Low Range,simply for the reasons above.
