I'm with Soundguy on changing injector. Fuel pump ? Honey (my wife) where's the checkbook?:D What no money in account:( Ed

an injector, on most tractors, which are equipped with some type of distirbutor type pump is just a spray nozzle.

by its nature it is relatively inexpensive
as diesel injection stuff goes

if that is the cause, in the diesel scheme of things, its the equivalent of changing a spark plug.

A $50 rebuilt injector is better than a $500 pump rebuild, but 3-4 injectors are a LOT more $$ than 3-4 plugs.

You should be able to pull out an injector and then loosen & twist a hard line and reconnect the injector with it outside of the engine. Then crank the engine and determine relative spray pattern. Don't point it at you ! You want to see a fine mist, not a jet. Loosen the other injector fuel lines to ensure it won't start. If 1 or 2 are bad, replace them. If they all are bad, it may be the pump. If they are all good, it may be clogged air intake or timing or ?

Good luck!

If you're going to pull the injectors, just take them to a pump shop and have them tested.

However, what are the chances that injectors are really the problem? If a single injector goes bad, it will certainly smoke but it will continue to run, although roughly. During this time, the operator would surely notice that something is wrong, long before the point that a second injector had failed. Key point here is that the engine continues to run. This engine does not.

So, what are we left with?

Severely restricting air intake will cause both smoking and given enough restriction, the engine won't run. It is a cheap fix but a long shot that the air filter is plugged, as it, too, would have given plenty of advance warning that it was clogging up. Easy to diagnose, too--take it out and see if the problem goes away.

That only leaves us with the injection pump and/or pump timing. Timing usually doesn't change unless something breaks.

For the injection pump to go bad and be injecting too much fuel, well that would result in black smoke all right, but also in an engine runaway, not black smoke and dying.

In my mind, the only causes that really match up with the symptoms are air restriction or pump timing.

Now watch me be wrong. It won't be the first time.

I got my parts in the mail yesterday!

I installed the fuel filter. The lines seemed to be good and clear. I was just getting ready to start re-building the injectors, but the clock said 9:45 pm and the thermometer said 3 below. I decided to wait till Wednesday when I should have a little more time.

I wish I could start the tractor up and move it into the garage where I have a heater and good lighting. As it is I'm working on it up on the trailer it came home on.

Is there some reason you can't back the trailer up to the door, allowing for head clearance and roll it off, into the shop? I for one know I would prefer working in a shop, even a non heated one, a lot more than outside in the wind and rain. Plus, you have to walk back to the shop everytime you need a different tool. Startup/cleanup times will also be less in the shop.

I'm with you on that. I think I'd be spending a couple hours figuring out how to unload it into the garage. Even if that meant dropping it off in the driveway & pushing it into the garage with the truck (or, a neighbors tractor)

If I was smart, I suppose I'd figure out a way. As it is, though, it's on an old farm made tilt bed trailer that has a pretty steep angle and no shocks. When it tilts, it tilts all the way all of a sudden. I went through the thought process of pushing the tractor back enough to tilt the bed and then backing the dead tractor down. When the thought crossed my mind "I should record a video of it for the guys on TBN" I realized it wasn't such a good idea.

Additionally, I'd have to find a way to raise the TPH and FEL so that it could roll.

I've been through the thought processes and I've come to the conclusion that the fastest, easiest, most comfortable way to do it will be running back and forth from the shop in seven layers of clothing with a magnetic trouble light stuck to the FEL so I can see what I'm doing.

Three degrees below zero really isn't that cold. In fact right now it's a balmy 14.7 degress outside. I may be comfortable enough in just three layers. I think I've just convinced myself to go out and work on it tonight.

14.7 is cold, but the cold has affected your brain! It is sixty something outside right now and I am fixing to go out in short sleeve shirt for a day of fun.

I'm not too proud to admit that your weather would be nicer than my weather for working on a tractor outside. More than the sixty degrees, though, I covet the extra hour and a half of sunlight you have.
