Bone Head Stunts

Yesterday I did a real stupid one- Our septic tank has covers at ground level for easy cleaning. A truck was delivering some stuff so I parked my tractor stradling the covers so the truck wouldn't run them over. Like a good boy I lowered all my attachments. When I went to move the tractor I forgot to raise the post hole digger on the three point. The tip managed to catch both covers and rip them off the risers to the tank below. Both risers were damaged as well. Now I have to dig up the top of the tank to replace the risers attached to the (full) tank. At least they are above the "water" level.

Well I just checked and there are 858 members so this should get at least 1200 replies. We all have done them and the shame of it is most of us don't want to admit it. A large portion of the repairs that I've had to do to the tractor were my fault.
Here are just a couple of super dumb moves. I've got a cab on my tractor and if you backup with the door open guess what happens---I broke the bottom pane of glass out of the door and also sprung the door. A tree jumped out behind me bent the fender and smashed the taillight. Chain broke and smashed out the rear window---I now have a heavy wire mesh behind the window. I could go on but thats plenty for now./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Gordon,

Local dealer told me he just sold two brand new tires to a guy who let the top link come loose with a box blade with scarfiers extended. Went right through both rear tires. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I ruined a tire once by a tree limb going thru the sidewall. Just like the movies very very sad. Boy was I ever mad the tire wasn't that old still had great tread.

I forget if it was here or CTB where somebody said something like: 'He had a new mower and his mother-in-law had borrowed the tractor. He went over to adjust the mower and wanted to see how it worked. He picked a 40' section of nice new grass and mowed it. Turned out he mowed a bed of spring bulbs that were coming up.

Nothing new of the bonehead sort: Except that we got real tired working in clouds of black fly yesterday. Moved a load of top-soil around a raised leeching bed to start regrading it up to the raised height. Forgot to compact the soil before leaving. Black fly can be very distracting. So now, I've got to get back out there to compact it in the next few hours before it rains or I'll have more topsoil than septic stone in the bed. It's now 5:30 AM, and even the dog probably would rather sleep than go with me.

It was the first day I had my tractor, and after showing my teen-age daughter how to drive it, she parked it on the blacktop driveway and of course I told her to lower the box scraper after she shut the engine off but I forgot I had the scarifiers all the way down. I told my wife that the five large divots in the blacktop are really a high-tec low speed rumble strip./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Well that deal with mowing down my mother-in-law's flowers was mine. I had forgotten about it, but she reminds me everytime she wants something done.

Bigfinn,
You forgot the ending.
Did your wife believe you ?

Take Care.

See you survived anyway. Hope some of your mother-in-law tasks at least require the tractor. If it was me, given my former-mother-in-law, I'm sure I'd have become a hermit by now.

Here is mine. First day with my new rear blade, which was the first attachment I bought, I was ready to flatten the mountain we live on. Hooked that puppy up, played with all the swings and tilts, raised the 3pt, ready to learn all about being a blade pro. The first thing I learned was that the blade is much wider than the tractor. The second thing I learned is that you can do some serious blade work on the side of a new Ford van. Third thing I learned is that my wife never forgets why my work van has a big scar down the side of it.
