Breaking up a large rock

Is there anyway you can dig a trench underneath it? If so build a big fire in that trench and then when it dies down to coals dump alot of cold water on it. Should shatter and then you can move or dig out the smaller pieces. I have seen it done that way.

Rent a mini-excavator equiped with a hoe-ram and you will have it broken into pieces in short order.

Can you dig a big hole next to the rock and role the rock into it. I have never tried this, but have heard it suggested before.

Borrow the mower from the kubota thread that "cuts thru rock like a hot knife".

If you have the room to drag the rack out of the trench, then just lever the rock one end at a time and slide in smaller rocks or cut logs about 6" - 8" in diameter and about 24" in length. lever the rock up out of its hole one end at a time. Then place some boards down in the trench and slide in some cut fenceposts using the levers. Tow it out by placing the rollers in front, if it drops then just lever it up and place the roller back under. I have dug up some pretty big rocks in my yard by this method. This was before I purchased my tractor. But one of the rocks was 5' - 6' in length by 4' in width and was 3.5' to 3' in height.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

I really like the Dexpan...been reading about it and it sounds amazing. Just need to get some 1.5 inch holes in the rock about 10 inches apart. Found a place on-line that offers 11lbs of the stuff for 29.95 which should be more than enough.

Gonna talk to my neighbor about and see what he thinks. I'll let you know if we give it a try.
