Well yeah.. vapor will drift out.. about the same amount as coming out of the 8n breather cap.

Walk out to your 8n and look 'past' the carb at the side of the block.. notice those 2 metal panels held on with a screw in the middle?

I'll be hogging tomorrow... I'll have to take a look. I've never noticed the
panels...

I prefer the breather setup on the 8N...

The 640 will have the same crank breather as the 8n... it's just the 640 has a OHV engine, and a seperate breather on the valve cover.. which, again.. should have an element in it.. if it don't.. you can make one out of blue airconditioning filter.. or green pot scrubbie..

Well, the 8N has a tube-type breather with a slide-on cap on the left side.

the 640 has one that goes on the right side directly to the motor and is
held by a wing nut. No tube.

Better check yer glasses.. the breather cap on the right side on the 640 DOES gointo a tube.. it is about 4" long, and is presse dinto the block.. JUST LIKE your 8n.. 8n has a longer tube that is all.

That wingnut don't hold the cap on.. it only holds the cap TOGETHER.. IE.. so you can open it up and clean the breather element inside it.. Grab that cap, give it a twist.. the entire cap cov=mes off, leaving at tube going into the block where you pour your engine oil.. JUST LIKE the 8n.

I have an 8n parked outside next to a 2n.. both with similar breather styles.. except 2n has the longer tube since it is a front mount ignition, and the 8n is a side mount, and the tube is located differently to allow for the left side generator. Next to that I have a NAA and a 660.. both have the 134ci engine.. same as the 640... next to that I have an 850 and a 951.. both have the 172CI engine, which is identical block to the 134CI.

There IS a tube under the breather cap ( which can be removed.. but not by the wingnut that holds it together ) on theose OHV engines.. While the tube is shorter and on a different side than the 9n/2n/8n.. it's still a crank breather cap into the crankcase.

I need to look for another breather on the the 640 then... I'm at work so
I'm working from memory. Your right. There has to be a place to put
the dang oil in. :D

This breather (or whatever it is) is wingnut held directly to the block, no tube.
Wire mesh filter in it.

I need to break my manuals out so I know what the heck I'm talkin' about.
They came in yesterday.

I'll drop ya a line tomorrow when I can be in front of it. I don't want to irritate you anymore... ;)

Oh... and thanks for all the help! Don't give up on me yet. :D

I'm not sure what 'breather' you are seeing on the BLOCK that is wingnutted on.. there is a Valve cover breather.. and the crankcase breather.. not much else...

Take a look at these 2 pics I've posted.

On the right side pic.. I circled the 2 breathers in yellow.. the one at the top is #1.. it is the valve cover breather..... and is atop the HEAD.. ie OHV.. etc.
the lower one is #2, and is the breather cover for the 4" tube that goes into the engine block.

The left side pic.. well.. guess what.. no breathers.. you have a gennny/alternator ( mine is an alternator ) intake/exhaust manifold, and a farb and air cleaner.. nothing else on the block on that side except welch plugs. This happens to be a 172ci engine.. but is identical to the 134ci engines.. except in internal mods for the extra 18 or so hp.. etc.

That clears it up... it was the valve cover breather I thought was the
only one. My cleaning rags were covering the lower one as haven't cleaned
that low yet. :D sorry!
