I have a question about the positive ground on the 640.

Some people are telling me that the starter may need to be re-wired
to work with a negative ground 12V system.

also... (sorry) Will the 12V voltage regulator be hooked up with the same
connectors in the same place?? Seems like things would be different changing
from a 6V positive ground to a 12V Negative ground.

Whover told you that the starter needs to be re-wound just plain don't know what they are talking about.

These starters spin the same direction positive or negative ground.. 6v or 12v.. though 12v does speed them up quite a bit!

The vreg will have the same 'type' of connections.. IE.. FIELD, ARMATURE/GENERATOR BATTERY and GROUND.. sometimes seen as FLD, GEN/ARM , BAT, GRD

Yor oem genny was 6v and B circuit.. if you have the genny rebuilt to 12v, as long as they keep it B circuit, you can use the regulator from an 01 series diesel, as they were 12v...

the tractor didn't come with genny / alt. or battery.

That's what is making this a little more confusing than it should be.

I'm an definitely going with a 12V setup.

I've been doing some research through the archives and this has been
gone over more than a few times so I hope I'm not driving you
guys nuts! ;)

Here's what I've kinda gathered...

If I go with a GM / Delco type alternator (3 wire), I won't even need the Vreg.

Switch the coil out to 12V and I won't need the resister.

Then it's just a simple wire up the way you have described, by-passing
most of the original electrical wiring.

Lord help me.... :D

You won't even have to 'bypass' any wireing to install the gm-delco alternator.. you simply won't use any o f the wireing from the old reg ( reg to genny ).

To install the gm alternator, you will need to purchase or make the brackets to install it to the block. there are commonly available tisco as well as ford brackets to make this conversion.. then you will want the 3-wire version of the alternator. It will have 3 connections.. charge stud, and (2) spade terminals marked 1 & 2.. Make a short jumper and jump #2 down to the charge stud. Connect the charge stud tot he bat wire that had run to the old regulator.. you can now remove the old regulator. Run a wire from the #1 spade terminal to the switched ( coil ) side of the ignition switch, inline with this wire, place a 194 marker lamp.. like a trailer marker. Many people like these as they have a wire pigtail for easy wireing, and some mount them on the dash. This will function like an idiot lamp.. IE.. when yuo turn the key on, the lamp will glow, after you start the tractor and bring the engine speed up to about 300-400 rpm, the lamp will go out as the alternator starts charging. As with a car, if you see the lamp come on, you know you are not charging. Alternately you can place a diode inline.. radio shack carries meny that will fit. Anything 1A/50PIV or better will work.. though something like 3A/200PIV is more ideal. i ahve had good luck with 1N5408 diodes. Radio shack 276-1141 and 276-1661 will work. The diode has a strip on one end.. connect that end facing the alternator...

Now.. if your alternator does not hav ethe correct pulley for your tractor.. you will have to trade it out.

-OR-

Since you had no genny to begin with.. you could locate a genny and reg for an 01 series diesel and install it. It will install inthe same place as the 00 series genny.. look the same.. etc... That would be my choice, if it wasn't to expensive.. all depends on what yuo can find the genny for. Unfortunately, the alternator will probably be cheaper.. even with buying the brackets.. look around though...

Do you still have the oem genny mount bracket attached?

No Brackets...

I have an alternator / bracket set-up on the way.

Getting ready to bar the engine over via the front access hole beneath
the radiator. Is the crank nut a standard right turn to tighten?

and would that be the correct way to turn the motor over?

it turns CCW looking at the flywheel, CW looking at the "front" crankshaft pulley, like almost ALL common tractor, automotive, and industrial engines!

forgot to mention.. pull the plugs and put a lil atf in each cyl for baring it over if it has not been run recently.. this lubes the cyls, and releases the compression.. etc..
