My bluegrass band and four other bands just played a benefit yesterday in a small SC town. This was a rally for troops from this region that just came back from Iraq. The whole downtown area and a high school stadium were used for this event.
Every one of them said that we do need to be there.

Careful about crossing the line. You're making assumptions that you cannot back up. I'd be wary of anyone who formed their opinions as a result of any news channel.

Almost everyone has formed their own opinions from what they've seen and heard on the news.
The only exception would be those that have been there in person.
People need to remember that the media can only report what they've been told they can release. That would take about ten minutes. The other fifty minutes are the news media's opinions, some wanna-be elected puppet's opinion, the average 'Joe" on the street and commercials.
How many of you out here on TBN have been surveyed for any of the news channels?
I have never been surveyed.
My answers would screw up their numbers. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
It's all controlled.

When C-Span puts its cameras in a hearing or a speech and records every word with no commentary, it's as good as being there in person. One can form opinions. If any question arises, or if the person speaking seems to be in conflict with something else, the internet has many sources of original transcripts and quotations without commentary or maniulation of context. I use them all.

This would seem to suggest that there will be no problem maintaining the rolls of the regular services and the National Guard units, if this is truely the opinion of all the service men and women returning from their tours. It is good that they feel their efforts and sacrifices are/were worthwhile.

"When C-Span puts its cameras in a hearing or a speech and records every word with no commentary, it's as good as being there in person."

A controlled environment. Interviewing people that personally have not been to or seen anything in Iraq; let alone talking to freed Iraqi people; freed from a ruthless dictator.
C-Span is owned by whom????? Controlled by whom?????
Much different than actually being in Iraq.

I don't think anyone likes the idea of war, any war.
But some things are worth fighting for.
Freedom is one of those things.

As one who deals with the media, I know for a fact that we release to them what we want them to know. From that fact-filled little bit of info, they form THEIR opinions and "embelish" their own details.

I thank our service personnel for fighting for my freedom.

It appears that you have not spent much time watching C-Span. Here is the C-Span mission statement:

"THE C-SPAN MISSION

"C-SPAN is a public service created by the American cable television industry:

"To provide C-SPAN's audience access to the live gavel-to-gavel proceedings of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and to other forums where public policy is discussed, debated and decided--all without editing, commentary or analysis and with a balanced presentation of points of view;

"To provide elected and appointed officials and others who would influence public policy a direct conduit to the audience without filtering or otherwise distorting their points of view;

"To provide the audience, through the call-in program, direct access to elected officials, other decision makers and journalists on a frequent and open basis;

"To employ production values that accurately convey the business of government rather than distract from it; and to conduct all other aspects of its operations consistent with these principles."

The environment is not controlled, and there are no interviews in the normal sense.

Draft = no good.

Instead, why don't we pay our fighting men and women enough so that there isn't a worry about finding enough willing volunteers to serve. A happy, well-paid volunteer has got to be better than an unhappy, poorly paid conscript no matter what the mission.

Freedom is so important, and most important is the freedom to choose your own destiny.

I come from a military family . Dad did 22+ years including ww2 and korea . I and my wife did 20 + years . My daughter and son in law are now on active duty .
Personally I don't think that I'd want to serve with anyone that was Drafted . You either want to serve or you don't ,for whatever reason . People either want to serve or find the need to pursue other life styles .

While I agree that the current pay for our military personell is lousey, that is not the point of them bringing back the draft. The point is even if the pay was fantastic, the people that need the money the most will sign up first. People of privilege will rarely sign up, no matter how much you pay them. And who makes the decision to go to war... people of privilege. It is strictly a class issue. Rich, carreer politicians make the decisions and poor people fight and die based on those decisions.
