The Water Department will make a tap on the 6 inch line to install a 1 1/2 inch line to my home and workshop. This is where the first meter will go.

To make the tap, they need to be able to access the pipe all the way around.

I'm cleaning it up underneath with a shovel. Seems I'm always using a shovel on projects. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This is it for now.

680 feet of 6 inch water pipe into my land is all I need for now. Later on down the road I'll add another hundred feet or so along with two 4 inch lines running off this line and a fire hydrant.

There is a cap inside this line to keep out dust, bugs and anything else that wants into my pipe.

The tracer wire is taped onto the pipe and you can see the reel on the right of the trench.

The white bucket contains chlorine in ganular form. It's a high concentrate that is put into every fifth pipe.

Eddie-

A couple of questions: You mentioned a hydrant in your last post. Are you required to supply your own water via a hydrant? Where is the closest hydrant to your place?

Also, with regard to the trench for the water line- how accurate do you have to be with respect to the bottom of the trench being level? How are you making the trench bottom level?

Thanks,

Bonehead

Looks great Eddie as usual! I bet it was a lot cooler working in the trench with the ground temps. Looks like you guys had fun judging by the smiles /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Tim,

Thanks, but it was still so hot in there that the sweat would make it hard to see. Add a litte dust to that and it gets miserable. Fortunately Steph is a trooper and will stick with it until it's done.

Bone,

The fire hydrant is a bonus. No requirement to have it, but since I can, I will. The whole idea of it came around from the water department explaining that I'd need a flush valve on the line. That much water will go stale over time and need to be flushed. Basically opening it up and letting several thousand gallons out. The valve set-up is several hundred dollars with the hydrant around a grand.

There are lots of advantages to having a fire hydrant on my land. It will be centralized to the layout of the RV Park if there's a fire. My insurance rates will be lower because of it. And for some personal reason, I just like the thought of having a fire hydrant.

The bottom of the trench just needs to be smooth and flat. There is no requirement for it to be level. I could have used a trencher and followed the contour of the surface which is how the water department does most of their lines. I have a backhoe, so that's what I used.

The water department determined the depth of the trench when they brought the line into my land. I put my bucket down and marked the depth with the bucket open. I just dig most of the dirt away, then drag my bucket teeth over the bottom watching my mark to maintain my depth.

There were a few little bumps that I need to smooth out, but that was loose soil that cleared with my boots.

When I do my sewer lines, the trench will have to be done to some fairly exact depths and slopes. Water is easy, sewer will be a much slower process.

Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie, Boy you do some great work!! Your trench has nice smooth radiused curves and look arrow straight and dead level smooth.... That picture from behind you on the backhoe looking into the trench is great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And to have a great helper makes a not so pleasant job much more bearable ....

I makes me thankful for the bride I have , When clearing our property of vines, deadwood or any difficult task my wife will come out and join right in tugging and grunting along side and it becomes sort of fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif watching her and laughing at ourselves . I once told her "Its neat that you can come out her and grunt along with me helping out instead of just staying in the house like some sort of house cat"

Her reply was " I ain't no daisy" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif very cool /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Before I could cover up the pipe, I had to have it inspected so they would know that I slid the joints all the way together and included the tracer wire. I also had to make sure there was dirt all along the bottom of the pipe. No air gaps.

Of course almost as soon as I started, a baby cotton mouth came out from under the pipe. It was only a foot long, if that, so quick work with the shovel. Not a good start to four hours of work. Oh well, at least there was only the one snake.

The tracer wire is only so long. This is where it ends and begins again. The water department said to put it inside a 2 inch piece of pipe and cap it near ground level.
