Bucket hooks

   / Bucket hooks #22
I'd prefer to place the hooks center of bucket to equalize the load on the arms. When I'm pulling with a chain around the bucket I often have to lift the bucket high to lift the front edge of what I'm dragging to clear rocks and such. If the chain is to one side things can get hairy quickly especially if pulling up an incline.

Been meaning to put hooks on my bucket for several years now but always seem to just make do with wrapping the bucket.

But that is often the weakest part of the bucket. You can "equalize" the load with two hooks simple by placing section of chain between them an lifting from the center of that, this Y configuration will distribute the load.

I only use the chains for my garbage can to the end of my driveway, pick up shrubs, and lift my deck to clean ....who ever said pulling max effort haha.

And the occasional log so it won't roll out

Also my hooks are on the strongest reinforced part of the bucket in line with the arms. A few hundred pounds with centered mass will not hurt a thing...not pulling like a hold my beer and get this **** on YouTube person.

Agree somewhat but that's assuming the chain is slipping freely at the load end to equalize the load. If the chain is not able to slide even a small almost imperceptible turn will load one side of the bucket.

Light objects there's nothing to worry about. The only time I'm pulling with the bucket it's big heavy floating docks out of the water and up an incline and getting the chains positioned on the bucket reduces arse puckering as a square to the input. I'm talking about the limits of hauling and flipping. Lighter stuff and it makes little difference

One of the issues that prompted me to use hooks/chain slots was I had a boulder that just would not go into or stay in bucket, just uses chain to contain boulder in bucket..... My solution was to contain things in bucket not to use as hoisting points or pulling points....

Really? I haven't been around here long, but I haven't got the sense that bucket hooks are unpopular. On the contrary, they seem very popular.

IMO a little caution on how to not break your equipment or injure yourself is always welcome where rigging is involved.

Amen brother blkqi. In spite of OSHA, butt covering companies, the lawyers in the room, and the self-righteous protectors of us all, I'd bet that a majority of private individual tractor owners have chain hooks either welded on or bolted on to their buckets. Why? Because it is extremely useful and any fool doing more with their tractor than mowing grass knows it.

I made up similar hooks with bolt on plates for our JD 640 Loader, and almost immediately mangled a jerk when the bucket was rolled back, as there was not enough clearance with a hook or chain in place.

At age 76, thinking I had heard it all, my vocabulary fails me... please tell us, Industrial, what is "mangling of a jerk?" My temptation at amateur humor is about to burst...

I'll bet "jerk" is "Zerk" but maybe autocorrect "fixed" it.

:rotfl::number1::hyper::applause::shhh::censored: I thought I was the only one who's imagination began racing while trying to visualize the incident.

Dang right -- and it's a lot cheaper than adding a full fledged grapple to the bucket as well. Interestingly enough the bucket that came with my Kubota actually had a lip on the back of the bucket which has served as an impromptu place to hook a chain a time or two. Not quite as nice as having hooks on the bucket, but it's worked for retaining lighter stuff.

In some ways it seems the biggest downside to all the safety features built into modern products is that so many user's seemingly proceed to disengage their brains and assume they'll be "safe" no matter what they do. Personally I'm of the opinion that it's safer to do something risky that you've actually thought through and determined a suitably safe way of doing it, than just going about doing things relying on safety features that were designed/built by someone who's not there.

Call me old fashion, but I prefer my safety to ultimately be my responsibility and while I may appreciate the assistance I'm not going to hand off that responsibility. ...seen/heard enough where people were blindly pushing things for "safety" reasons that would have increased the danger/risks because of something unique to the situation.

The Jerk managed to mangle himself other ways, I assure you. Yes it was a ZERK, but those can often be Jerks too.

I hope you don't mind if I steal the phrase I. T. . I plan on applying it to a guy I know that always trys throwing gravel in the gears when someone is onto a good idea.

Works best if the gears are nice and greasy.

Trust me. No such thing as a good idea. Just some things tht actually turned out well, in the end.

I put hooks on my loader bucket a quarter of a century ago. And I guess, that idea was had long before I was born.

AND, I do stuff like this: DSC04625.JPG
Everything using common sense.

Not sure how to get rid of the image below.

Just a D ring inside the upper part of the bucket. Top of the Massey bucket has a lip that could be used for light work.

My dealer has welded hooks on both buckets, 1 in the center, prior to delivery. For free!

Here’s what I did to mine a couple years ago. Welded a 3/4” thick flat plate to the top for support. The clevis can be installed backwards and is out of the way. I use it for chaining tractor to trailer mostly.

Wow, I did not know tow hooks are such a bad idea, ha.........

So I know our tractors can hurt/kill you, but I was unaware of the dangerous tow hook.......

I guess I have been guilty for about 9 years, of installing 2 bolt on HF Tow Hooks on the top of each side of the loader bucket, and 1 bolt on HF Tow Hook installed high on the backside of the Backhoe Bucket.

I also installed a HF bolt on Step Bumper Receiver in between the loader bucket tow hooks that has a pinned slide in receiver with a large D-Ring Shackle attached out the front of it.

They sure make things a little more easy from time to time and are very handy indeed......

I will be extra careful in the future while using my tow hooks?
