Dumb question from a new member, why use nails not screws? I thought screws were supposed to hold better? Getting ready to build a fence myself and planed to use screws until now.

If you look behind Chloe and Donnie there you will see the new fence (the black one) that was built about 5 years ago by the original owners who we purchased the property from. He had cows, mules, etc. That fence was down with locust post and rough cut oak boards painted with your typical speciatly fence paint from TSC. Locust is HARD but also very hard to find these days.

Now, in these pictures you can see the "new" un-painted portions that my wife and I have been doin over the last 6 months to divide pasture etc. The post are PT 4X6X16 cut into 7 foot sections and sunk to about 3.5ft. The fence boards are rough cut 1X6X16 bought at TSC or Southern States. TSC's prices have gone up in Leesburg to $9.XX/board from $7.95 while as far as I know SS are still around $7.XX last time I checked.

The holes were all dug with a Woods PD65 and a little elbow grease.

Building fence with 4x4 pt post with 2x6x16 boards salt treated.
The cost of the 2x6 were the same or very close as the 1x6x16.
hot wire goes along the top board.
We are hardening the fencing around the paddock after they have pushed through the electric fence 2 times in the past few weeks.
Nail gun comes in handy.
the electric fence was strung on landscape timbers that have rotted out in 3-4 years.

Have you checked vinyl? I have 1/4 mile three rail vinyl with a hot wire at the middle rail using a 6" nail on extended insulator, threw away the nails and used screws. I have cattle and horse's, it cost BUT its attractive, won't rot, bust or rust. A lifetime fence.

Nice looking fence there. I've looked at some of the rough cut boards at TSC in Leesburg, I think that is the only TSC I've seen that carries the rough cut.
I want to put up a board fence one of these days.

What brand did you go with...

Seems horse people either love or hate vinyl where I am...

Last time I built a horse fence was spring 2008 and the board was 7.50 at local (Warrenton) coop. Southern states carries them too and TSC in Marshall also.
Rough cut oak board.

I use half round posts and 4x6 for corners and gates. Holes, did some with hand held auger, but now I am much happier with digging bar and post hole clamp digger. Two holes before breakfast is a nice workout:D

BTW, mark.r - thats a nice place you got there.

Check at Riverbend Sawmill the next time you need fence boards. They had better prices then TSC. They are on Cochran Mill Rd on Goose creek past the quarry. Your place looks Great.

I have been going through some pretty hard clay myself lately. Working alone, I do not have a helper to "rock" the auger so I rock the tractor but it makes for a pretty sloppy hole sometimes. My Harbor Freight electric jackhammer with a three foot bit came in pretty handy too!

As for not using screws, I can tell you that nails can usually be tightened up without breaking but screws tend to snap off when you attempt to snub them up especially in PT wood.

I am using Hotcote (actually White Lighning from Centaur) for the first time. I picked it up at Tractor Supply on a close out at 103 and change for a 1000 foot roll. I had a lot of Centaur at my last farm and would have used it again except for my budget.

Having had to hit four Tractor Supply stores to clean up their stock, I ended up buying extra. Figured what the heck! That turned out to be a good move because once I saw how four rows looked for a five foot fence, I went to five rows which I think looks better.

I went with a six foot fence for my two stallions so I ended up with six rows of wire there.

I used to deliver pole barn materials in the Leesburg, VA area and there certainly is a lot of board fence there same as around the Lexington area here in Kentucky. It sure is nice looking but I don't think I would want to have to maintain it.
