Rotary Cutter bush hog not cutting

If blades are locked togeather do not use your hands to unlock them. There can be a sudden release of energy when they unlock that can be injurious. Use a long bar, 2x4, etc. Miked74T

That is nice to know cause I am lost.... I have a 8n Ford ...red and grey...if that means anything. haha...it has bush hog on the back.....it is just to weird if the blades move but not cutting...is that the norm...?

I drive down 168 everyday from Porstmouth to Moyock. I'm hardly an expert but I could take a look if you are not to far out of the way. Some times it just takes a fresh set of eyes to find the problem.

Ok Sunny....I am like on 168....so all depends on if you ride on Battlefield or Centerville....I am on Centerville 3 blocks from 168 if that is not to far. That would really be a GOD sent. Thanks <hanging head> tractor killer

I think I know the area your are in.... its southern cheasapeake not far from the high school (the name of which escapes me) on battlefield. I'd have to get off at Hillcrest and come down battlefield. Send me an email or PM and I will see if I cannot make it today. My work email has a very secure firewall so please post here if you send me either today. Tomorrow is the start of the labor day weekend so the tourist traffic will start getting thick early, I try to make it home before it gets to bad personally.

Well, I want to thank everyone for their advise....Seems everyone was right....blades where stuck....missing some kind of bolt to raise the rear of the bush hog up. Seems I need a new transmission......SunnyJim came by and gave me lessons...Now I don't fell so stupid....I also need a new water lid. Seems he found out all kinds of things wrong with my baby. But now I can start to fix it one piece at a time... haha.... Thanks again

I'll try and add some details if I can, it is a 5ft Howse bush hog. I found the transmission was loose on the deck, the upper link was not connected to the bush hog so it would not raise correctly. One of the blades was stuck 180 degrees from its correct position. I had to use a piece of wood to knock it loose since it was not swinging very well. Once moved to the correct position I noted a large chip in the blade. After a few questions it turns out that the cutter had struck something in the field when all this happened so I checked the shear bolt which I had expected to be shear but it was intacted. I also noted grease around the transmission, once the top of the cutter was cleared of grass I could clearly smell gear oil. Turning the PTO shaft by hand I found what appears to be some missing teeth in the transmission on the bush hog.

I recommended stopping by Bage Industries which is right down the road in chesapeake close to the NC border. Bage Industries I know sells Howse implements and has allot of items a compact tractor owner would need including replacement howse transmissions. I've been eyeing a Texas Bragg equipment trailer they have myself.

Tractor Killer, the first house I ever bought was in Chesapeake in the Deep Creek township not far from the inter-coastal waterway. I remember spending a lot of time in Great Bridge also.

That was back in the early 70s during the gasoline shortage. I remember driving 19 miles to NC to buy gasoline one day and found out NC was limiting purchases to 5 gal. By the time I got back home, I'd burned 3 gallons. So, I drove and waited in line for about 2-1/2 hr just to get 2 gallons of gas to the good. Those were some desperate times.

In 2005 I was there and drove by my old house. It was virtually unchanged except for lots of trees cut out of the yard.

Not really. It does need a new gear box and I have tried to take the bolts off...and well..it is like a fish swimming up stream. I just don't have the strength or the right tools so I just don't know what to do. Nobody around here works on them.. So how to people get bush hogs home? What am I missing here.

It's been 3 years since I was last in the area, but at that time there used to be a JD Dealer on the corner of Dominion Blvd, and Great Bridge Blvd, as well as a Kubota/NH Dealer on Military Highway in Chesapeake. You might want to try and contact one of them.

We used to live off of Great Bridge Blvd ago when I was in the Navy, and my Daughter and SIL still live in the Deep Creek area.

Best of luck!

TK, you either have to have a trailer and truck to haul the cutter home or get somebody else to do it. There are major dealers who have delivery trucks, but their cutters may be more expensive. If you buy one at a cheaper place like TSC, then you'll have to find and pay someone to pick it up and deliver it. That's also costly. I think most of the TBN folks here either have a trailer or access to somebody who has one. Unless you find a friend with a truck and trailer, I think you are going to need to start looking for someone to do the job for you. A roll back wrecker might be the best place to start. I'd check with a wrecker service to see if they would haul it and unload it for you at a reasonable price.
