Will, that's a very astute observation. As a member of Tractorbynet and (I assume) a university faculty, you must oscillate between two extremely different political environments.

Glenn,
Extremely different about sums it up. There are some republican math professors though. One retired a couple years ago, and the other left in the early 90's. We've got a couple of professors at UGA who can argue with themselves, but otherwise you don't hear two sides of many political issues.

Will, I was on the law faculty at FSU in 1988-89. There was still a small group of "conservatives" there. I put that in quotes because they probably would have considered themselves liberals in the '50's and '60's. The vitriol between them and the neo-liberals was palpable, and affected decisions and votes far removed from politics. It was very unpleasant and one of the reasons I decided to leave academia.

Cheney-Lieberman debate is tonight.

I like Cheney better than Bush and Lieberman better than Gore. Of the 4, I like Cheney best. McCain was my real guy, though.

Glenn I watched only a part of the debate and then i just couldn't take it any more and shut it off, just after the part about gore inventing the calculator. This should give you all something to hoot about.
BM__MailData How to be a good Clinton/Gore Democrat

Virtually anyone can be a Democrat. Just simply quit thinking and vote
that way. But if you want to be a GOOD Clinton/Gore Democrat, there are
some prerequisites you must have first. Compare below and see how you
rate.

1. You have to believe the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal
funding.
2. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th graders
how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
3. You have to believe that guns, in the hands of law-abiding Americans,
are more of a threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology, in the hands
of Chinese communists.
4. You have to believe that there was no art before Federal funding.
5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by
cyclical, documented changes in the earth's climate, and more affected
by yuppies driving SUVs.
6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being
homosexual is natural.
7. You have to be against capital punishment but support abortion on
demand.
8. You have to believe that businesses create oppression and governments
create prosperity.
9. You have to believe that hunters don't care about nature, but loony
activists from Seattle do.
10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually
doing something to earn it.
11. You have to believe the military, not corrupt politicians, start
wars.
12. You have to believe the NRA is bad, because it supports certain
parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good, because it supports
certain parts of the Constitution.
13. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too
high.
14. You have to believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinhem are
more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee
or Thomas Edison.
15. You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial
quotas and set-asides aren't.
16. You have to believe Hillary Clinton is really a lady.
17. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked
anywhere it's been tried, is because the right people haven't been in
charge.
18. You have to believe Republicans telling the truth belong in jail,
but a liar and sex offender belongs in the White House.
19. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag,
transvestites and ********** should be constitutionally protected and
manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal.
20. You have to believe that illegal Democratic party funding by the
Chinese is somehow in the best interest of the United States.

You are welcome to add to this list, if you aren't too depressed
already!

Glenn,

That's what I am: an old time liberal--done went and gone conservative in my old age! Frankly, these days I am trying to locate a good used electron microscope, so I can tell the real difference between the candidates. For most of my geezer friends, it seems the more they rely on gov't handouts, the more "liberal" they vote.

I thought Cheney-Lieberman was a very mature and elegant debate. The historian Doris Kearns Goodwin said it best on one of the talk shows: you got the feeling that if one of these guys were president and the other were the leader of congress, a lot of things could be gotten done in this country in a positive bipartisan manner.

Richh, amusing and true, hence somewhat sad. Did you create that yourself?

I gotta agree with you glenmac. I think the parties got he order mixed up The VP's are both better candidates for the # 1 position than the ones running. I was very impressed with Cheney. Seems like a very bright and intelligent man. I could see him in the oval office easily.

I'm with you, Gerard. I'm more impressed with the VP candidates, especially Cheney.
