Buying green, but which one - 5420/4710?

If the deal on the 5420 is that good, then you shouldn't have to worry too much about depreciation.

I use our 5420's FEL to haul big trees the size you have without having to "drag" / pull them. It can be a balancing act. Of course, our trees are thinned out enough to do this. Also, the 5420 can push over some trees with the FEL up high eliminating having to cut them. If your are lucky, most of the root ball comes out too. Might not work for older Christmas trees.

Cowboydoc is right. You'll need the extra HP for the 8-10' shredder. Especially in the thick stuff.

I can honestly say you WON'T Regret having the 5420's size and HP for the initial jobs you spoke of...Kyle

I have a 4510 and I use it mostly for moving manure, dragging the arena and road maintenance which it is just right for. Lately I have been knocking over some of the scrub oak on the property(up to 14") and, for this, the 4510 is too small. If I could have purchased 5420 for the difference you mention it would be at my place right now. If storage space/size is not a problem what is the downside? Go get the bigger machine.....you wont regret it.

Working at a JD store now I have come to realize that the larger tractors hold their value much greater then the smaller compacts so when looking to sell you would probably be better off with the normal utility tractor than a compact.

Well, I thank everyone for their input. Going against the bigger is better philosophy, I've decided on the 4710. The quick detach FEL, eHydro tranny, and 0% financing were the big deal makers. I can always rent a dozer to do the really heavy work, and still have several thousand dollars in the bank. Now I'm working on the deal - looks like I can get a pretty good one. I'll let you know about it once it's done.

The 4710 will do fine. But I would add a backhoe to it. Ripping out that stuff and pulling the stumps is backhoe work. I've had backhoes on my lst 4 tractors and would never buy a tractor without a backhoe for the work you're describing. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I wish you luck but I am afraid you may regret your decision to get the 4710. It is a light duty machine and the loader is lighter duty still. I suspect that you will destroy the loader if you push over that many large trees. I have a 4700 and my loader is worn out in less than 2 years of use. I would take the 5420 in an instant or get a 110 or a Kubota as they have much heaver duty loaders in my opinion.

I went through the same type of trades you are making. I too decided on the 4710 this past fall. Absolutely love it. I purchased pretty much every attachment for it including the Backhoe.
I was debating over the heavier work I wanted to do initially. I hired it out. Glad I did. Now I have an all around tractor that is everything I wanted. Especially love the ehydro, that is what drove me to the 4710.
