Junkman;

Here's a link to the thread BX2200 Alternator upgrade .

The instructions are indeed pitiful, however they do provide some clues. I still have them and could try to make them available to you in some fashion if you would like. Just let me know!

Thanks Bob....... for the time being, I am not going to do anything till the weather gets warmer. I will study the post that you have provided a link for and decide if I need the paper instructions. I think that with my extra left hand and third thumb, that I shouldn't have any problems with it. Besides, if I do need an extra hand, that is that the N.E. CT TBN club is all about ...... lending a helping hand when you need it.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, bit the bullet and ordered the upgraded alternator. Right now my 2200 is hard pressed to keep the lights, heater and wiper going. Hopefully the new alternator will take care of that.
I haven't taken the old one off to see if I have a bushing in the block or if I'll have to drill it out. According to the chart, my moter was made in Feb of 2002. Looking at the current set up there there appears to be a sleeve between the washer and the block....hope so anyway as I don't really want to drill out the hole.....I'll find out as soon as the dealer gets the upgrade kit in......

I ran everything I had for a while yesterday after finishing the install and it dimmed some at idle but picked right up with a bit of throttle. I don't have a clamp on ammeter so I couldn't measure what it puts out but I ran my heater on full, 2 55 watt halogens, 4 way flashers, factory head lights, and windshield wiper so I would guess a load into the mid to high 20's.

I don't know what you mean by sleeve. I've attached a picture of the pivot bolt before removing the dymo. You won't know without removing this bolt and looking at casting whether you need to drill or not. The kit won't even mention it. If you have a spacer between the block and your current charging unit then you may already have the upgraded alternator? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I also ran into the issue of not having a bushing when I installed my kit last month. (BX22 - engine from march 2003). I used a Milwaukee 3/8" close quarter drill to get around the confined space. This, of course, after I spent a good half hour with a punch and hammer trying to find a hint of a bushing. After drilling, I still saw no hint of a bushing. I think there are at least two types of castings.

I don't remember any leaking when I swapped the bracket. Since I installed the block heater at the same time, there was already a good puddle of anti-freeze to hide the trail.

rbarker:
Thanks for the info. When I looked at the bolt assembly on the tractor there appeared to be a ridge between the casting and under the washer. As I said I haven't taken anything off yet as I am waiting for the kit to come in from the dealer. I am hoping that I won't have to drill it out but with my luck I will have to. I may be able to borrow a "stud" (angle) drill from a friend. That should mean I don't have to take off the starter....I hope!
I'll let you know what happens.....at worst I can get the dealer to do it!

Hey Bob-
What size drill did you use? I am going into Home Depot this week so I can pick up the right size if I don't have it in my "drill drawer".
Thanks

We just installed the high output alternator on a new BX23 and ran into the same problem. We solved it by making a bushing 10mm by 8mm for the alternator and using a longer 8mm bolt thru the bushing. Hope this helps.
