BX25 for Creating Large Pond

How long have you owned or been familiar with the property?
My first thoughts would center on the newly discovered natural spring...does it stay wet/flowing all year long? Being "newly discovered" I would not go to any great efforts in creating a pond until I was sure the spring could keep up and maintain a satisfactory water level...

If all you have is a small tractor, then that's just what you use to get the job done. Nothing wrong with taking a little longer to get what you want. Springs are tricky things. What they are is an area on the surface where the ground water has worked its way to the surface. Some are at the base or side of a hill where the water is leaking out of the hill. These are the best types of springs to use for a pond because the water level is above the pond location and the water will drain down into the pond. The other type of spring is where the ground water is so high that it is coming up to the surface, or close to it. These are the worse kind of springs to create a pond with because the pond will rise and fall with the ground water. The water that fills the pond will also be the source of the leak when the water table drops. Think of a creek that runs most of the year. Even if it hasn't rained for weeks or months, where is the water coming from? It's leaking into the creek from the sides and bottom of the creek from springs. Once the table water around the creek dries up and lowers, the amount of water in the creek decreases and sometimes stops completely. A water hole might remain in certain areas all summer long because that is how high the water table is in the ground around it. Just digging a hole or building a dam does not mean that you will have a pond. Eddie

It will do the job, and it will do the job just fine, you just have to know that *(it happens, and it does not matter one bit if you have a "small" tractor or a large tractor. The only difference is if you get a large tractor stuck it is a great deal more work to get it un stuck.

So lets think about this idiot thing for a second. I get a little tractor stuck and in 20 minutes it is out and we are laughing about it. After getting a large tractor stuck, you are having to find even larger machines to get it un stuck, so personally I think your are even a bigger idiot if you plant a large machine, then a machine that comes in at less then 2000 lbs. Goes back to the bigger, is it really better, well if you don't make a mistake I guess it is. I know a great many on this forum are perfect and do not make mistakes and would never get a large machine in a problem area.....good for you, myself I make plenty of screw ups so I guess it is good I bought a little machine that will do every job even if it takes a little longer, and when (not if) I screw up, I have a guy behind me with a large machine to pull me out in 10 minutes.

I am really glad you don't make mistakes Eddie, and don't have to worry about getting things unstuck.

???? I have no idea what you are referring to.

I get stuck all the time and I get myself unstuck with what I have, no matter how long it takes. Worse case has been two very long days that resulted in trees coming out and a mess that took another day to clean up after waiting several months to dry out.

What is an idiot thing?

Using a small tractor to do a job just because you are afraid of getting stuck all the time is a pretty timid way to go through life.

With a BX you simply do not have the force available to excavate with the bucket. Youll need a 2' bucket to match the tractor force ability.

Apparently he didnt see my post #20 above.

Digging a pond with a BX would be a very time consuming job. I don't think a BX would be capable of digging a pond here because the ground is pretty hard. If someone had a BX and wanted to dig a pond they would be better of renting a larger machine.
