BX2660 HST fan GONE, gone, gone...

My original point was that if Kubota was mid-course correcting, and now installing a much better protection system, and I believe it is a huge step forward, that notifying all BX owners that they could stop in a Kubota dealer and pick one of these up of free, or at cost price of what? $10-15? would have been the right thing to do. In fact, Kubota did not choose to do that, nor even draw any attention to the improvement. I don't personally believe the Japanese business culture (think Toyota?) quite "gets" some of this, but that is just my $.02

I don't believe one should HAVE to always have an MMM on to protect that silly fan. Sorry, but there are many times when you cannot use it as you'd wish with such a thing on underneath.

BTW, JD and MF has similar fans. Off my soapbox now.

AMEN!

I bought a new fan, cut out the center and then glued it into place. I put a couple of screws in to reinforce it and never had a problem. I spent $8. I can't fugue out why anyone would do more than this to fix it. It is a design flaw - no doubt about that.

You HAVE to know, that if I should ever break mine, God forbid, that I will do likewise. BTW, how hard would it be to design a split assembled replacement fan in the first place? Grandpa used to say, "If we can send a man to the moon, for cryin' out loud!" OOOps!! That Grandpa was me!!! Got dangerously close to that old soap box again.:D:D:D

John...yep..I turned in early to dream about how to fix this issue!! The 3030 is certainly in service...but I just hate having to take the BH off and put the scrape on, and put the BH on and take it off again, etc... So...for now, I'm digging stumps with it.

The 2660... I wasn't in the woods...I was pushing up a few stray "sticks" of no concern before I dropped the tiller in the dirt. This one stick missed my bucket blade and got turned lengthwise with the tractor...it was probably 4 feet long. It curved straight up when I ran over it and it was drawn to the "light" of the plastic fan. Silly really... that it should ever happen like this. The more I think about it, the madder I get.

...'You can remove the MMM for other farming applications but MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO STICKS OF ANY SIZE ON YOUR PROPERTY that you might run over. Not that there's a precariously placed plastic fan under the tractor or anything like that...why?' Kubota engineering

That fan could be made with a "fold" joint say at the 9 o'clock position and a snap connector at the 3 o'clock position. I've ordered 2 fans. I'm going to creat a "v" notch from the inside of the collar and epoxy the other side with a "fish plate" of sorts...similar to when you lengthen a frame rail on a truck. I'll then cut a similar sized piece to glue over the "V" notch side to reinforce it and also balance it to the opposed side. I'll take pictures for everyone. I have a fan shroud that has been epoxied for YEARS and is still strong. Plastic adhesives can be used with great success these days as they melt and meld in to the plastics.

I still say the smartest thing would have been for Kubota to have designed a slip style driveshaft. There's NO reason you should have to pull an engine to replace a broken driveshaft....at least none that I could understand. Maybe an engineer could speak to that....but my common sense tells me there's no reason it couldn't be used. PTO shafts are telescoping....

honestly, to be mad without a skidplate with broken fan is like up the creek without a paddle. :(

I saw comments about fan being made out of metal- hmm I think it would be dangerous- shrapnel all over if it hit anyways. feul line punctured, or nick the spring for HST adjustment, etc.

I think everyone is on the right track here- we need a aftermarket fan that is thicker, wider, better plastic then the stock fan that can be assembled from 2 peices. Unforunately, I don't know where to do to have someone design one and keep in stock for us.

I'd sure like one of the guys to post a pictorial, step by step, of the fan replacement using the cut in half, glue and screw together method.

Now that thread would live in infamy!!! (maybe there is one already?)

Also, the guys all buy grill guards, not because there is a radiator in the front of a BX, but merely to protect cosmetics. That improved fan guard is well worth the small price and is protecting a much more important thing. Just saying. It won't likely prevent every accident, but a whole lot of them.

It is frustrating, because believe it or not, folks do use BXs for more than mowing. Horror of horrors!! Some of us don't even have an MMM. Well, off to church, (good for my soul) and then maybe I'll use my BX for some actual farming activity, perish the thought.:D:D

First question to those who may know...

In order to access the fan from above, what has to be removed? Seat only, deck + fenders + seat, etc... In order to cut the fan off, it would probably be easier to access it from the top. I can reach it from below, but I may go ahead and get good access from above.

this is just me thinking out loud but a two peace metal fan that bolts on like a cylinder rod would be fast to replace and you could use a plastic or rubber bushing kind of a slip clutch to keep it from coming apart.

pros metal = stronger and possible slip gasket material prevent damage fast change out

cons balancing this contraption

over all these tight quarters and exposed stuff is what has me looking at m or 5000 series when i finally get out of school and get some property

Apparently SEohDave reports:
"I have done the glue trick with my HST fan. I cut through it once at a point halfway between the two mounting bolts. After twisting it around the drive shaft and bolting it down, it felt quite sturdy. I gave it a test run. I wasn't considering calling it finished at that point but I figured if it held together reasonably well at that point, the glue might just have a chance.

After revving the engine to about 3K, the fan didn't even seem to flex. Before gluing up, I wrapped a zip tie around the fan hub. Then mixed up a batch of slow-set epoxy and slathered it across the cut and also around the zip tie to help it stay in place.

I've put about 20 more hours on it since then and it's holding up fine."

Interesting, they don't actually cut the fan in half, merely cut a slice into it so that it can be spread a little and then wiggled into place. Then glue, epoxy, or super glue. I would absolutely try it. I'd buy two as well, in case I didn't like my first attempt. I tend to do better on things the second time.

BP....I'll try to post photos when I get started. The fans should be here Tuesday. I have to wonder if it wouldn't be easier to perform the swap from up top though...instead of underneath. BUT...I've crawled under the BX and it's fairly easy to get to so I'll just play with it and see. You can bet I'm gonna' give it the ole college try and make sure the glue has set before reving it up. I see no reason for it to NOT work really.

Keep your fingers crossed! I'll be back once the fans are here and my camera is charged.
