If they couldn't tell what was factory made versus home made, then that is a high compliment to your abilities.

Absolutely.

Did you put a finish on the insert or is that from your bead blaster?

Thanks guys. I removed the mill scale with the bead blaster and then refinished it with crinkle finish paint. It will be protected with 3-m clear tape ;)

hate to derail the thread, but some of the pictures brought up a couple questions, and from experience, i can tell you're the unbiased type, so i'll put them to you:

1. what type of material was that plate? i've seen people on other forums do a lot of talking about having issues milling hot rolled steel (a36). is it a36, and what type of cutter is that: hss, cobalt?

2. one of the pictures gave a good advertising shot of a shars vise. i'm going to guess you're satisfied with the performance of that brand? too many people say that you have to have a kurt, and frankly, i don't want to spend more on my vise than i did on the mill to start with. lastly, what size would you go with on an rf-30/rf-31? is a 5" too awkward, or would a 4" be a better fit?

thanks.

Hum. Some very good questions my friend. Yes it is A36 1/2" steel plate. I went with that because I already had it here :D The table don't take of the work load. It's there to just house the guides and add a little more working room by the notcher.

As far as milling the plate I went through it like hot butter BUT I was using the Hanita Varimill cutter made in Israel. These things can cut like you've never seen before. Even at low RPM and fast feed

to cut the slot or ledge on the notcher table I used an indexing carbide cutter at first and then went back to the Varimill to square it up. Please remember I'm not a machinist :ashamed: I'm just making do with what I have. ;)

As far as the Shars vise goes I'm very pleased with it. It wasn't my intention to show the name of the company. That just happened because it was in the target area of the picture. I like that vice because it's a CNC vise and I can turn it on it's side and mill with it that way as well. This one is a 6" and for me it's the ideal size. You'll notice when I was doing the large plate I had to move the jaws to the outside of the vise which will open to 15". Just love it. I just can't see a Kurk being any better than this but maybe someone can prove me wrong.

Great questions. Thank you!

Very nice, Paul! I agree with your friends, that piece looks factory made. Looks like your mill is getting it done.

Thanks Jay. I'm still trying to get used to the new mill but I'll get better at it in time (I hope anyway) I think the only thing that I didn't like about this project was the cuttings and trying to keep them away from the work so today I had a brain storm and came up with this system to solve that problem. I used a blow nozzle. This one will turn on when you twist the head of it and the air volume can be regulated by the twisting of the head.

I found an old car phone mount and use some of it's parts and along with a few machined parts I think I've come up with a salutation to the cuttings problem. here's how it turned out.

A few more pics!

I do believe that it's starting to come to life.

"Good morning Dave...Ummm, Paul. How are you doing today."

To be serious again, I like that nozzel you found. That's sweet. Have you tried it in action yet? The only possible drawback I can see is that it looks like it might be in the way of the handles on the right, but depth perception doesn't convey well in photos. There could be a lot of room between them.

Cyril I just did it this evening so I never tried it yet. The hose can actually go allot lower but I just propped it up there to give a good visual of it. There's also a swivel fitting going on the quick connector when I get into the city to get one this coming weekend. I think it will work fine. Time will tell. ;)

If not, a simple solution might be to get a male and female QD and put a 90 degree elbow between them so the hose comes to it at an upward angle.

The work looks great as always though. I always am marveled by seeing the things you make.
