Camera, what to buy

I think Sony makes some good products, but I ordered a Sony Mavica direct from Sony on the Internet. When it arrived, the flash did not work. By the time I got through dealing with Sony on that deal and got the camera sent back and got a refund, I'd had made a firm decision to not buy anything with Sony's name on it for at least 20 years./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif So, I then bought an Olympus D460ZOOM; an amateur's camera, I'm sure, but that's all I am and I've been pretty happy with it./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Never heard of buying anything "directly" from Sony. Did this save you a lot of money or was it just a convenience thing? Hopefully, I'll have better luck that you did, the other brands just didn't appeal to me ergonomically more than from a quality or feature standpoint(JVC and Cannon). I also got the 2yr merchandise agreement from Circuit City as the price of this is a bit above my disposable appliance threshold as with vcr's and some other electronic devices. One thing I found really interesting on the WEB was the wide array of prices on the same equipment. I found a difference of over $500 but many of these places were in NYC and there seemed to be much doubt if what you were getting was new or if you would ever see it at all. Still, there seemed to be a lot of dissatisfied people out there where they left comments on the selling place. I guess the lure of saving that much money is just too great for many. I was especially leary of the ones that didn't even put an address on their site. So, I spent the buck and I look at the extra money spent is for peace of mind. "If it looks like to good to be true, it probably is".

Here is a link to Toshiba's site. The PDR-M25 is a good entry level camera and you can find them under $300, but this bundle would be a good starting place. A friend of mine just got one of these and I'm pretty impressed with it.

Jeff, I did some "shopping" on the Internet and looked at a number of new and used digital cameras on E-bay, then found that http://www.sony.com was offeri...www.acknowledge.com/tractor/BirdSig.jpg[/img]

The Kodak DX series comes in different pixel resolutions and prices. I've been researching them myself, as gonna buy one after Christmas. Will probably get the DX3700. It has 3.1 Mpixel, 2X optical and 3X digital zoom. Current prices according to C-Net last night are $243.00-$349.00. One of the best features about the DX series is you can get a docking cradle for around $80.00 which lets you download your pictures and recharge the batteries at the same time, although the camera comes with a cable for downloading the pics. The docking cradle comes with the rechargable batteries. The draw back to the DX series is they come with small amount of memory, but you can cheaply add large memory sticks. Just my opinion. Walmart usually has the best prices on the Kodak cameras.

As you can see there is no shortage of information and opinions when asking about digital cameras! All I will offer is that I have the same camera as Bird...the Olympus D460Z. I don't see it as an amateur camera, though. It is a good camera, takes great pictures and has a lot of nice features at a good price.

Even the top cameras are easy to use if you just leave them on full automatic or program, whatever they may call it. Just point and shoot.

Currently, the best camera by both professional review and popular acclaim is the Canon Powershot G2. You can get if for about $750. Also excellent is the Nikon Coolpix 995. After a $100 rebate deal going on now with Nikon, you should be able to get it for $600. The just shipped Nikon Coolpix 5000 was the cause for great anticipation, but the reviews so far arent great and it costs $1100.

I just picked up a Nikon Coolpix 995 for 678 (578 after rebate) from www.buydig.com. That price included shipping. No sales tax. Nice camera.

I have the C-2100 plus a 1.7x teleconverter for those times I really need to get close! The other feature of the E100 and C2100 is the stabilized lens, a feature I consider a must. These two features have allowed me to get some great pictures from great distances at very slow shutter speeds with the flashing green lightning bolt telling me to use the flash, which would have been quite useless at my distance from the subject.

If taking pictures at a distance, e.g., football games, basketball games, concerts, etc. are anticipated, you can not beat the 10x optical zoom. I think the next closest is 6x or 7x.
