Just go by trial and error. Load it up with 4-5 ton and if something breaks just shovel a little off and try again. If something else breaks it is still a little overloaded, shovel a little more off and try again. Sooner or later you will get to where nothing breaks and that will be the sweet spot to go for. Any trip after that you should be in good shape.:D:laughing:

Or get all the weight rating in each tire, each wheel, size of ball and connector, size of truck etc, and post again. I would try the trial and error way myself :cool2::cool2:

Or maybe just hire someone with a dump truck and get it all in one load and be done.

That's what I would do. Hire a dump truck. Dump it where you need it. Even get two or three tons extra for likely no additional haul cost. Done.

I’m betting a big truck will charge the same amount to haul 1 ton or 20 tons. It won’t be a cheap bill hauling 100 miles one way, but how much is not having to make 5 trips and not shoveling off 20 tons worth?

Lets just suppose he can find a real cheapo dump truck to hire. Around here they were hiring out at $75 - $90 per hour a few years ago. A 200 mile trip is going to take 4 hours minimum including load time and dump time. Unless his time is a big factor, he could make 2 trips withoit overloading and be money ahead. Whatever he chooses, msking a 100 mile trip wsy overloaded would ne the wrong choice.

If you have rental trailers available in your area rent a 12k dump trailer for a day.

I don't think that I would want to dump 4 tons of pellets... going from 160 bags of neatly stacked bags on pallets to a big mess on the lawn.

"pellets" ???
I thought the OP wants to get COAL !
Where did the "pellets" idea come from?

But they can haul about 20 tons. There’s no way he can make the trip 4-5 times for $400

I get my coal in bags, either one ton per pallet or 1.2 ton per pallet depending on brand.
I can get three pallets in a stock trailer, or I have put part of a pallet in the truck bed and 1 plus on the single axle utility trailer.
I sure as heck am not going to be dumping pallets out of a trailer.

For $400 I was thinking of a 3 axle truck which can haul 10 to 12 tons. To get 20 tons he would have to hire a super-solo with 6 or 7 axles and the price would be considerably higher.
The OP was talking about hauling 3 tons and bumping it up to a 4 ton load that would overload his equipment by 25% or more. My point is that rather than haul an overload 100 miles he would be wise just to make 2 trips. Since he has done this anually, he could hire a dump truck for $400 at three to four year intervals if he has a place to dump it.
