Cat 1 pallet forks vs. carry all

The TSC carry all would be fine for light duty stuff but I wouldn't be rolling logs onto it that's for sure.. It weights 86lbs, pretty thin steel and poor welding done on most of them from what I saw.. A lot of people have to modify the top link hole on the them, not sure if that would an issue for your tractor or not.

It's rated capacity exceeds the rear lift capability of my tractor, so I would probably have a hard time breaking it due to overload. As for logs...there are logs, and then there are logs. I'm talking about smaller stuff, 8 foot sections of 12 to 15" diameter trees. Heavy, yes, but unlikely to approach anywhere near 1,000lbs.

I'm building one too. I started out with the carryall from TSC - it does work with standard wood pallets - it is built from 3" x 3" x 3/16" steel angle and isn't meant for really heavy work, but I've loaded a 500 pound pallet on them without a problem. I built a pallet style carryall of wood. I'm getting a loader on my tractor and will also be needing ballast, so now have this plan...

Using the ballast box, I'm going to add the carryall carrier on the built in hitch so I can have both the ballast and the carryall or either one. I'm also going to try to fabricate a set of forks that will plug into the receiver hitch on the ballast box for my wood carryall which has sides and places for saws and chains and stuff.

I read on another thread to fill the ballast box with something you can take out easily (like cement blocks) so you can adjust as needed. I happen to have a lot of blocks of solid granite that I can fill it with as needed.

The cement blocks work great for me, I use 4x4x8 solids 22lbs each, easy to lift when you want to add or remove..

Appreciate the real world feedback. Hope you'll post pics of your progress.

Here's my old Ford with the TSC carryall with a wood pallet. That's my grand daughter helping out :)

I had some pictures of my wood carryall, but my Sangsum phone erased them AGAIN. I'll post a couple later.

Great pic.

That looks like the King Kutter model, rather than the TSC branded version. But you're using it the same way I would like to.

You are correct rbstern - it's a King Kutter. I thought I'd purchased that from TSC - maybe Northern Tool? Anyway, it uses 3" x 3" x 3/16" angle and is rated for 1000 lbs.

Here are some pics:

The ballast box loaded with granite. I'd guess around 400lbs - could weigh all the pieces :)

Some old hot tub siding on the floor to protect the deck wood.

Underneath the carryall you can see the King Kutter's leg - I just let gravity do the work of holding things together for now.

In this photo you can see the tractor side of the carryall - it's another part of the old deck I used and with a couple of scraps, my saws and tools can be carried. The white plywood in the center forms a box for stuff. I'm looking at something better for saw mounts as I don't like my saws and tools getting banged around. I have a couple of Buyers landscape trailer tool carriers that I'm looking at mounting somehow for weed whip and pole saw.

My plan for now is to mount that ballast box on the 3pt, then insert a "King Kutter" style unit with a receiver hitch mount so I can load my wood carryall onto the ballast box. Plan on using the same size steel angle (3"x3"x3/16") for the frame.

Thanks to everyone here who shared their ideas!

Awesome. Really practical setup. Nice work!

Thank you! Purdy wasn't a priority... practical is. I'm thinking about mounting that black Polaris saw carrier (in the carryall) on top of the ballast box in some modular fashion as well. That will be a better way to carry all the chainsaw stuff as it is made just for that.

I'm also probably going to buy some Kubota orange to visually appease those who need visual appeasing. ;-)

edit: oh, and I weighed the granite and was very close to 400 lbs and the box itself weighs 132 lbs. So the entire thing is about 500. That may not be enough, but I have some thoughts about adding another 300 pounds or so using a $20.00 weight set I bought off craigslist.
