Chain and Binder - general tie down question

/ Chain and Binder - general tie down question #11
How do they determine the WLL on all these chains and binders?

the WLL will be reduced at every attachment point and bend in the chain.

And your tractor might weigh 4500# sitting on your deck but, what will it weigh with all the forces acting on it when you Emergency stop at 55mph.

I work in an place that sells transport chain.... as well as other wear parts for equipment and snow chains....we stock 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 inch.... 95% of people out there take the 3/8 inch... sometimes they only haul the same thing you haul, but I believe that it is better to play it on the safe side... and if you look at it this way... you also have a good heavy tow/utility chain with you too, instead of light duty chain that might break if you give a good tug on it

WantedWolf.. here is a binder chain specification chart I used. It is in .pdf so I'm not sure it will post here, probably download if you click on it at the bottom of the post.

Also, your question about forces, etc. The quote on the sheet to pick your chain and grade is "Minimum number of chains required to secure loads in a FORWARD direction by weight of the article in pounds". This is based on (as noted) 0.8g of deceleration.

I would defiantly stick with gr70 and probably go with 3/8 over 5/16 its not much more money and when you figure how long its going to last its small piece of mind not only for the safety of your equipment but also the people on the road around you and the hassle of getting pulled over. One stop by the police is enough reason for me to go overkill on tying down my load. GR 70 wont get a second look but something other will and that reason alone is worth the upgrade to me.

Okay, I looked at the chainandbinder.pdf file. For a 10,000 pound load, it says that I need two grade 70 chains. Does that mean two chains on each rear corner (four chains in total)? Or just one chain on each corner?

How would an inspector know what grade the chain is? Ken

Its stamped on the side of the chain (or if not they know it isn't because it should be).

G70 has a stamp on the chain but doesnt say G70, its usually a little raised mark.

I needed to get to this list done for the trailer insurance purpose anyway so thanks for the motivation guys.:)

This is what I carry on the trailer, (and some pics) and what ive learned is:

-regarding securing the load, I can hold down anything.
-Carrying all this stuff means I have enough remaining GVW to haul a bike.
-Not to mention the Winch, mount, extra spare tire and saddle box that were not present at final weigh in.

The yellow binder in the center is really slick, the salesman was a friend of my FIL and thru it in as a "promotion" when I bought the chains. It is adjustable by the thumbscrew to 3 inchs and it has a locking feature to save mousing. 6600#WLL 3/8 or 5/16 Price tag said $55can.

Any possible laws aside...doesnt common sense say that more opportunities for failure (murphy's law) occur when more variables are introduced. I am refering to 4 binders instead of two. We know that the cam type binders can release and ratchet type threads wear plus the 4 more hooked points.
If an engineer looked at a 4 corner binder setup and ran a DFMEA, the back binders would be scratched.
If you just have one chain on the front and one on the back and one breaks there is nothing at all holding that end of the tractor.

You misunderstood the post, When I say binder I mean chain binder not chain.

Just a "heads up" on a good price, I have discovered the local HomeDepot carries a 5/16" X 20' Grade 70 "binder chain" for about $40.00. Hard to beat that price if shipping is involved :D
