Hi All
I just went through every post I could find on the subject of Chain Hooks on a FEL. There are as many ways offered as there is ways to breakfast & back.
Has anyone added chain hooks to a JD 419 FEL?
I purchased some 3/8 weldable hooks. When I was surmizing where I was going to mount them,I said self let's go talk to the guys on TBN.
I was thinking about welding them on top of the attaching brackets right where the linkage hooks in to the bucket at the top.
Is this a good idea?
Thanks for a great tractor site, I really enjoy reading such great Ideas along with the posted pictures of your ingenuity.

Your plan sounds good. You want the hooks close inline with the mount and the cylinders so as not to tweek the bucket.

Be sure to get some pics, as we all love to see pics of others projects:D

My 790 came with hooks the dealer installed as a 'package'.

Mounted next to the outside edge.

(I'll go snatch a photo)

Go down to your dealer and ask him where to put them. Even better, have him show you some his shop has welded on.

When I bought my tractor, I asked them to weld on hooks, they asked "where?" and I started to tell them. Then I stopped short and said the most intelligent thing I had uttered in over a year: "Put them exactly where you put most of the ones on other machines. Let your welder decide."

Attaching them to the existing brackets may be the quickest and/or easiest option, but if you put hooks directly in line with the cylinders you can't ever wrap chain straight around the back of the bucket from the hook if need be. The preferred method by my dealer was clinch hooks at the strong outside edges with a center slip hook for 'tweekless' heavy lifting. If you have to add bucket lip reinforcement for hook mounting surfaces, that's to be considered a bonus! :)

I just welded up another chain hook for my recently purchased new
Kioti. I like to install just one hook, mounted to the middle of the
back of the bucket. I use a chunk of 1/2" steel with a 1/2" wide
slot cut into it at an angle. I weld it perpendicular to a 1/4" reinforcement
plate of about 6x6". I got this idea many years ago from a
commercial b/h operator I hired. The slots work better than hooks
cuz they can be unhooked by just curling the bucket. Mounting
to the back of the bucket increases lifting capacity and avoids
bending the front bkt lip. Mounting to the bkt center avoids tweaking
the loader and/or tipping the tractor with very heavy loads. Kubota
bkts are a special challenge in that they have no flat spot on the
back of some of them.

Here is a CK20 loader bucket with brand new chain slot-hook.

SIR,
i welded two hooks on my fel. first i welded on a 2 x 3 angle
at the top of the bucket. the metal on these buckets is pretty
thin, and i wanted to make the unit stronger. i used stitch weld,
to attach the angle, and then welded the hooks on. these are
11 in off the center, and 22 in apart. i know some people attach
theirs on the outside top of the bucket, but i wanted to make the
lift near the center. it has worked very well.
