Chain saw chain replacement

Which color chain are you using? There's one link on the chain that is colored.
Green is homeowner anti kickback chain.
Yellow is aggressive chisel chain.
Red is the carbide chain in question.

I recently upgraded to the yellow chain and can't believe the difference. Cuts much faster and it seems my saw has a lot more power than before, probably due to less clogging, etc.

Scott,

I think you might have the right answer.

I use the yellow chain. Its supposed to have a higher risk
of kickback but if it is sharp it does get the job done....

I don't know about your area, but here in TX, Lowes carries Husqvarna chainsaws, bars, and chains too. While I don't know if this really answers your question, I just thought you might like to know.

I like Oregon chain, not the low kick-back type, but the low profile chisel tooth chain.

I have found all chain is not created equal. As long as you quit cutting once it gets dull so you don't heat the chain and take the temper out of it a chain will last longer.

BTW I like Romans 8:28. Romans 8:29 is what I'm looking foward to also.

I don't know about carbide but I like Stihl chains on Husky saws. Seem to last a lot longer than Oregon.
Do you have a lot of sand there? I have found sand to be the enemy #1 to a sharp chain. Up here it even gets INTO the trees. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Those Stihl chains make that Husky run better?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You have to have a Husky to get the performance the Stihl chain was designed for /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Dead oak wood will kill a saw chain as fast as hitting the ground a few times. Any dead wood does, but oak is really bad, especially if the bark is on it. The bark kind of rots from the inside out and creates a dirt-like substance between it and the wood: not good for a full chisel chain. I always want to use a full chisel (Stihl RS chain), but will digress to a semi-chisel (Stihl RM chain) in dead wood because it will run a lot longer in dirty conditions. It won't cut as fast when new, but saves lots of time in the long run. Also, wood with thick, loose bark, such as hickory or cherry (never cut cedar) are tough on chain also.

I'm cutting the same stuff you are out in Bastrop County - and I 'll go through 2 or 3 chains in an easy day - my solution is constant sharpening - I bought a bench grinder from Bailey's and I like the chain I get from them too. Less kickback protection - but cuts like the devil.
