Chain saw sharpening advice sought

I'd try the Timberline Sharpenerif I could plug it into something, from now on my sharpening tools have to have a motor, although I'd be ok sharpening a chainsaw by hand if the saw only had a 12" bar.

For those who dont have a junk PC for DC power, one of these Stanley Batt. booster works pretty good to power a Grandberg saw shapener, it's what I use, and it has an air compressor for small tires, that works good too.

Would a typical 12V battery charger work to power the Grandberg sharpener? That is, if set on steady charge and not boost? I already have a couple of chargers and it would be more convenient than pulling my pick up up to the barn/shop and hooking the Grandberg to the pick up battery.

Probably. I have used my old Schumaker on a low (2A) charge setting as a 12VDC power supply. You might want to check the output voltage on yours. Mine runs about 14-15VDC, which I take to be within design limits for a motor built to run from a lead-acid battery.

This is probably the simplest way to power 12VDC devices with a 120VAC source, as long as they fall under it's limits: Sunforce AC-to-DC Power Converter, 5.8 Amps | Inverter Accessories| Northern Tool + Equipment

Yes, a regular manual battery charger will work.

Thanks, that will make it much more convenient to use. My Grandberg has not yet been delivered but I am glad I will be able to power it with my battery charger instead of from the pick up battery - at least when I am not in the field.

I always thought a battery chargers had to be hooked to a battery to be able to power something or it might burn out a 12 volt motor, CB, radio, tape deck....

I would think filing on a harden steel plate will dull the file quicker.

Now that's not a bad idea, might be able to find something like that on ebay with free shipping
