These are a very well thought out and practical solution. Thank you for sharing your idea with us. I use chains all the time and will "implement" your solution when spring arrives.

Instead of a bore cut, how about screwing together two 5/4" deck boards with a large enough spacer block for the bar?

Just a thought, Jeff

Jim, Thanks a lot for a great idea.

I have been unhappy with my chain storage solution for some time. I even tried to figure a easy way for square tube boxes, but abandoned the idea, because it was too big. I never gave the skinny boxes mounted outside a thought.

I now have 2 chain boxes, very handy, just as I exit the tractor, thanks to you.

I will think, how great your solution is, each time I reach for a chain for now on.

I like it, I'm gonna do it! Thanks!

I guess I need to make a trip to the scrap yard soon and get some materials. I'd like to try making the bottom out of steel mesh welded on. Better drainage and the mud and dirt won't build up.

I tried to send you a private message, but you have that feature turned off.

Just thougt I would re post this photo. If you have room it works well and keeps out the mud and rain.

I suppose I could do that, but I had the scrap 2x6 sitting around, and the whole thing only took me about 2 minutes to make (including the time to go get the 2x6 from my scrap pile). Besides... it was a good excuse to practice control of the chainsaw (I had just returned from day 2 of "The Game of Logging" chainsaw safety workshops... training I decided I needed if I was going to avoid killing myself with a chainsaw... they use a bore cut as part of the process of felling a tree. A method much safer than what I had been doing.)
