I know some people believe in chain only, but I find that nylon tow straps do the job for me and are much lighter and store easier.

Yeah I agree California they are somewhat limited w/o a ROP especially. I just mounted a tool box on my buddys 1610D (similar to a 186 I think) in between his ROP looked perfect cleared everything nice.
I thought I had it set in properly but a couple weeks ago he smashed it with the top link out tilling and somehow they went higher than I could get them to go in the shop probably hit a high spot so its back to the drawing board for him looks like we will mount it a few inches higher most likely or build an UP stop of sorts. (he was carrying his chain in there too)

I've got a few chains laying around in the cab of each of my tractors, pain in the butt usually. There's got a be a good solution out there. I'm not keen on pvc pipes. I used to love keeping chain in the slots on my logging winch when logging but don't have that on the tractor lately.
My toolboxes are both too small for tools never mind chain. Both my loaders have a hollow torque tube in the boom, maybe a couple of expanding rubber plumbing test plugs could let them stow some chain?

a toolbox would definitely be preferred 
and is what I have on my tractor mounted on the rear of the fender, it holds quite a bit of junk, including a chain and the hose that would link the to hydraulic lines together, never know when I might have to drop the FEL Not sure if I ever post my toolbox but here it is and where I have located it on my tractor, I wouldn't see when having a deep enough toolbox why a chain and a few essential tools couldn't fit inside, the ammo case is also a good idea,

I drilled holes in my tool box and set it on top of the lower bar. I then used u-bolts to hold it to the rops. Your not suppose to drill a rops as it weakens it and could allow a rust location or spot for water intrusion.
Oh and for somereason i had in my mind petejudd was the OP. Thats why i kept refering to him and his grandson in the avatar. Sorry thats my fault as i guess i just never looked at the thread starter name each time i clicked it?

Here is a pic of my toolbox. Just an old metal one i found around the farm. The ply is just 3/4" that sets between the toolbox and the ROPS. As i was worried the old toolbox sheet metal would flex to much with weight in it and or be to thin possibly from rust. The Ply just gives it a solid base. All of it is clamped up with the nuts on the u-bolts being inside the toolbox and either another piece of wood in there or large washers to keep them from ripping through.

Hey Scotty on mine I drilled and tapped my ROP and used 3/8 course thread bolts and a piece of 2" angle across with 2 short pieces of 1" angle welded out @ 90 degrees to support the box and drilled thru the box into these to hold it in place with a couple bolts I will look for a pic.
On my buddys 1610D VN we ended up welding the bracket to the ROP I dont remember the reasoning behind that at this moment but that decision will haunt me here pretty soon as we have to re-do it.
On mine I had to move mine once also but it was real easy to just drill and tap 2 more holes up a little higher and that consequently gave me a place to put the tarp strap that holds my top link up when its not in use in the old holes hint hint.
Couldnt find a pic sorry if I think about it after work tonight I will go over to the ranch and take one for you.
Btw if you are worried about drilling and tapping the ROP I dont think its anything to worry about a couple 3/8 holes here and there wont weaken it IMHO someone else may have engineering degrees and say it will but as always ymmv.

Im no engineer, just repeating what i heard. Also if yours fails or something you will never sue if your hurt wont hold up in court. NO i dont worry about the sky falling.
