Chain Storage Ideas Wanted

For me, sometimes the chain is just laying on floor in front of clutch pedal, but mostly I leave it wrapped around the forks on FEL

... would use that if I had ROPS on my tractor. Now if I need a chain, I drop the implement, grab one of the trailers, and use it to pack the chain
I see the YM186D in your avatar. When I bought mine I was frustrated with the lack of space to carry stuff like I do on the YM240. At the minimum I need to stow my windbreaker as the morning warms up. I really should carry drinking water too.

For the YM186D I finally slung saddlebags off each side of the cowl, anchored from s-hooks hooked into the cowl next to the fuel cap. The lower end of each saddlebag is wired to whatever I could find low down.

The left side saddlebag (visible in this photo) is a tiny backpack like I've seen motorcyclists use, while the right one is an insulated bag (for a couple of 6-packs??) that has backpack straps.

A pair of childrens backpacks would work if you don't mind a Rainbow Bright or H. Montana motif on your tractor. :D

These saddlebags are sufficient to carry my jacket, gloves, pruning shears and folding pruning saw, and a half gallon of water, all of which are essential to get any work done.

As for chains - I have wrapped chains on the Quick Hitch which is nearly always on the YM186D. Some day I want to make a toolbox/chain carrier to go on the Quick Hitch. Sometimes I have hung a square plastic pail from the front edge of the QH (visible in the photo referenced above) to carry stuff. A more robust version of that would work for chains.

I haven't done it but a piece of 3 or 4" pvc pipe on the loader post with a drain hole in bottom cap and hose clamped to post.

tom

I'll 2nd this idea, the only thing I did different was to just use a loop of wire at the top so it could be portable. When I need the chain somewhere else I just grab the wire{pvc with chain in it} and hang it where I need it.

You might look at the loader frame mine had a hole alread put through at the right spot for mine.

The bracket up front for suitcase weights works well to store chain on or around for me. With weights attached, I just wrap it around the frame for the bracket, connect the ends together, and use a small bungee cord to ensure the grab hooks don't disconnect. On one machine, I have a plate welded on the bottom of the bracket, and it is deep enough to just carry a chain down in there. It's out of the way and clean.

I was gonna say this to. Looking at Judds pic of him and his grand in the avatar pic i can see the bracket up there. Just wrap your chain back and forth around this in the style like they did on old 4x4s with the big bumper in the 70's 80's. I did this on mine with like 40ft of chain for weight before i changed the front bumper/weight i have up there. You can easily wrap way more than 20ft of chain on it.

I just keep my 20 footer in my tool box behind the seat.

I pondered a real cool way to do it and after a lot of wasted time just gave in and did what came natural in the box it went. :D

This is my fuel gage being shown in the pic btw. ;)

I was just about to say what? All i see is a tool box, but as the reply box was poping up i was thinking in my head what i saw in the pic and the rod came to mind and i got it!!!

Sorry no picture, I just took a piece of PVC{4"} capped the bottom {drilled holes for drain} then at the top drilled 2 hole across from each other and fastened a loop of wire to it{could use rope also}. I then can hang it on what ever machine I am using or just hang it in the garage. The nice thing is that the hooks hang on the lip of the pvc so the chain never tangles and is kept neatly stored out of the way.
