I have a 1,600 foot long by 10-12 feet wide driveway that is currently gravel AB (mag spec 3/4" minus rock with fine sands). It's a good road base but getting sick of the dust and rocks.

Just wondering the costs to have a driveway my length, chip sealed? Since I already have the road base, just looking to have the tar poured and the chip seal laid and rolled.

In CT, we chip seal a lot of the secondary roads rather than put down of new layer of asphalt. I've never seen it done to a driveway. Following the thread.

I just bought a top dresser and it get's me to wondering about this process.

It also makes me wonder, in an age where a drop of oil on the ground is illegal, how they justify pouring thousands of gallons of tar on the road?

They probably justify thousands of gallon of tar the same way they justify millions of tons of asphalt.

I mean. if there is a vehice accident and some fuel is spilled, its a major environmental catastrophy.

How great a base do you need for tar and chip. My 1000 foot driveway become quite like a sponge when the frost goes out.

I noticed this at an airport. Millions of gallons of jet fuel is apparently not a big deal. A few baggage trucks that are probably 50 hp or less has to be propane... IMG_7213.JPG

Are you talking about dumping fuel to reduce weight or just in general. (Cat walked on my keyboard and I have no more question mark, only odd symbols!)

Just burning it. Planes burn way more fuel than other means of transport and I doubt have any emission control standards. I don’t think commercial aircraft dumps fuel but I could be wrong.

They say it`s the absolute worst thing the average person can do to have a BIG carbon footprint. Commercial Jet Airtravel, that is.

I think, they dump fuel all the time, if they have to land, without having used up enough fuel.

I wonder how much TAR costs. How much do you need. They did a road a mile away from me, last week. Always amazed how it looks just like gravel and you would never guess it turns out the way it does. You would think, maybe just in the travelled portions.

Chip sealing would be a fine process. The operation works much better at scale so I doubt you will find a contractor who will be economical for just your place. BUT if they are doing other work in your area they may swing by and knock your place out on short notice.....offer to pay in cash. They can probably lay 1600’ in under an hour.

Another option is BST. Both will work better if you lay down several layers over the first 10 years or so.

I met a guy many years ago who had a small side business doing it.

Not sure of costs in your area but tar and gravel about 60 percent the cost of asphalt maybe less depending on the size of the job. Should be applied in three coats to get you the best bang for your buck. The tar used in our area is called CRS 2 and is water based so no harm to the environment no hazmat license required to haul. When finished should be about one inch thick

I just had hot asphalt put down. I paid about $1.80 ft2 for 2.5" thick, compacted to 2". I also inquired about chipseal or just spreading reclaimed asphalt. On a smaller area (I did 3600 ft2), there wasn't enough cost difference between them, so I went with the superior product, asphalt. Virtually the same equipment and labor is required for all of them, so I wouldn't expect a huge cost difference between them (Grading, spreading, compacting). Larger areas the cost difference adds up though.

By your measurements they used 45 tons of asphalt, how much stone? At 400 sq yds one would expect 100 tons of stone would be used. Sounds as you got a great deal

Buppies,
If you're asking me, no additional stone was needed for my driveway. I already had a gravel driveway of 5/8" flexbase. They regraded/compacted the existing gravel and put asphalt over it. In fact, the gravel driveway was in pretty good shape as I haven't needed to regrade it in over 6-7 years. Our issue was dust and then softness if we had days/weeks of rain.

It all depends where it is and what it affects. The soil is like a natural filter... it may kill the plants for a short while then nature takes over... If it runs off into the waterways then there are bigger issues. They will treat the spillways differently than on land.

1968 - Palmer, AK. DOH contractor lays down tar & chip on one half of the state highway going thru Palmer. About five miles worth. Roller is done - that half is still blocked off. Something happened - here comes the AK State police - he looks like a blinking Christmas tree. He swerves out onto the new tar & chip section to avoid the contractors equipment.

The tar & chip coat rolls up on his cruiser tires - just like a jelly roll. He gets about 80 feet and is brought to a quick stop. Something with the materials used or the process is WRONG. We were in the strip mall parking lot and saw the whole thing. At first everybody kept it contained - then one person began laughing - uncontrollably. That's all it took. An entire crowd burst out laughing. The highway patrolman got out of his cruiser and the crap stuck to the bottom of his boots also. I can hardly contain myself, right now, as I remember this scene.

It even made the evening news in Anchorage. Bottom line - the entire job had to be scraped up and new laid down.

The baggage trucks drive indoors to unload the luggage. People stand next to them all day long, propane exhaust is a much better option health wise.

The dust has gotten pretty bad on my gravel driveway in the last month. I dream of the day that I can pave it, but I still want to run some water and power lines under it for future projects, so I'll keep adding crushed concrete to it for now.

Gordon, do you have any pics of your driveway?

Sounds like there was a problem with ionic charge between tar and gravel. I have seen similar problems
