Thanks all, I'm really pleased the way it turned out. After driving a mile on gravel and dirt road to get to our place no one has felt right about driving on the paver drive, now with the compass rose at the entrance, the drive just might be a wide sidewalk, we will see.

Dave1949, Thanks for the info about the solar sun. Austin's solar noon is 1218 and Houston is 1208, so I'm somewhere in-between closer to Austin. However if the shadow does not hit right I'll have to blame the sun.

Ron, each other section will take about 3 weeks with minimal interruptions, or they will done one week after you get here. I'll start again after I get un-sore from all of yesterday's hand tamping.

Thanks for the complements all. Yesterday, when my Mom came over for Thanksgiving dinner and I showed her the pictures, she said that it looked much better than it does in the pictures........wow, that was a complement!

The sun has not come out since I finished so I have not found out how far I'm off of north according to the solar sun. I'll post a pic when I can get that shot.

Will have to see how the weather is when we head south. If the weather is good we could get one of the bigger sections done before New Years. If weather is bad and we have to leave later. Then we may be able to get the small section in front of compass done. Or maybe wait until spring to stop and help with the final section.

The accuracy of the Compass Rose to the Sun

November 24, 2012.
The sun was out at noon and here are the results.
The sun dial was a 5' level in the center of the rose held in place with a tripod.
The picture with the shadow to the west of north was taken at 12 noon.
The picture where the shadow falls on North was taken at 12:15 and 30 seconds (+-30 sec.). I guess this is solar noon at this latitude.
Austin is 50-60 miles due west and solar noon there is 12:18, so I'm very close!

Can anyone figure what my latitude is IF the compass rose is true north?

I'd say you came pretty darn close!

Yes, someone could figure out your latitude knowing the level is 5' long, it's solar noon, today's date, and the length of the shadow cast by the level.

Solar noon is the only "noon" a sundial can accurately read. Solar noon is not a constant offset from clock noon, it varies seasonally.

Yesterday I placed the last paver on the drive to connect the circle. YEA!
This coming week I will finish the last area that connects the drive to the front porch and put this thread to rest.

The connecting sections to the front porch were initially going to be landscaped, but the first person to use that section of the drive last February stepped right in the hole. The two section below will be the last of this project. I have just enough pavers to finish it.
