I'm genuinely curious about that statement. The epithet 'closed mind' seems like the most hypocritical slur that can be thrown. Two people think they are right and both think the other is wrong. Which one of them is closed minded? See? So what does it mean? And why does the term always come from the left, aimed at the right? You rarely hear the converse but it is clearly equally as true.
But let's be more specific. Two people have an opinion on global warming. The first thinks it is a proven phenomenon and that it is beyond any reasonable doubt that man is the cause. Given that conviction he decides to take action himself and demand it of others. The second guy thinks there may be some warming but isn't convinced it is a trend. He's looked at the available info and feels that there is insufficient data to prove its a trend, much less manmade. He thinks there might be multiple factors and will not take life altering action nor demand it of others.
Is one of them closed minded?
The charge of 'closed mindedness' is always a cheap shot. It rarely has merit and is no more effective at bringing understanding than actually being closed minded. It suggests that the one making the charge is morally or intellectually superior and likewise the one being charged as thoughtless.
And if something is immutably true and right, then one must be closed minded about it, by definition. It would be illogical to assume otherwise. And if one counters that there are no absolute truths, well, how closed minded is that?
So as you can see, the charge of closed mindedness is pretty useless as anything but an insult.
