Where/who makes a good heavy duty come along/winch.
I would like a heavy duty type, double ratchet, not one of these cheap aluminum light weight type.
What do you consider the best a cable type or chain type come along?
Also who is a good supplier of log/towing chains?
Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
Hillbilly

Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what you want. I can't think of the name of the manufacturer right now, but we have several at work that would fit the bill. I have a cheapie I'd like to replace myself. One of the better hardware stores near me has a great selection. A couple years ago, I stumbled onto one of the chain-type comealongs at a used tool barn for $30. It only has about 6' of chain, but the thing I really like is that it is infinitely adjustable up or down. If you need 1/8", you got it. The cable jobs mandate a click at a time................chim

Hillbilly, maybe it depends on what you call "heavy duty". Try this link for what I have. They come in half ton to two ton models and I haven't been able to break mine.

Be prepared to spend some bucks if you really want a heavy duty puller. I've used cable, strap and chain pulls and nothing compares to a chain! (but they are big bucks). If you ever see a used one grab it. I have acccess to 2, a 5 ton and a 2 ton, both make the cable and strap jobs look like a joke.

I have a Chisholm Moore Model E chain puller(1.5 ton). Very nice machine. I wish it had a double acting ratchet. I have seen this model so tight that the chain would sing. These pullers use special chain so if you have the bucks and the strenth to lift it you can make it any length you want.

I rented a come along the other day...I think I will call the rental supply and ask them.I never thought to ask them where they got it when I returned it and I had to work this weekend and just thought I would ask the question while I was at work(doing nothing) and see what my brothers at TBN might have to say. This one I used was heavy one,but it done the job.
Bird....thanks for the link but those are not what I want.I appreciate it just the same.
What about some nylon straps....anyone?

Try AW Direct. They are a supplier to the towing and recovery industry and have really high quality straps, straps with different ends, straps with chain ends, etc., along with high quality Amercian made weldable hooks, chains, etc. Check them out. I think you'll be impressed.

Hillbilly, I was in a TSC store earlier today and they had the chain type; 1 ton was $69.99 and 4 ton was $99.99.

Thanks Gary and Bird......I have been hard on chains this winter, broke 2 or 3 and stretched one a while back, these chains I had for years....never thought I would mess a chain up........Anyway I am going to have to restock and get a good come along...to have on hand.
I am going to go up to TSC and look around.Gary I ordered a catalog from that link you gave me.I think I will get myself a heavy cable for the towing and try to use the chains for load binding.
Thanks

While it is a bit distant, this site may give you some good ideas. I have found BB Chains prices to be reasonable - bought ratchet type webbing binders and such and have never had a problem.
