Art, Ernie, Ken, Greg - thanks all for the discussion on alternatives to the JD303 for the trans/pto. If I understand correctly, sounds like I can use mercon dextron on the 2310D trans/pto. This is a terrific forum for sharing experiences.

My manuals are on the way, but I'm curious that in the absence of glow plugs on the 2310D (3T84H-S engine?) where exactly is the thermostart element? I had expected to be able to trace to it by following some noticeably heavier AWG wiring to the point where fuel enters an ignition chamber, but have not seen it. Not a thermostart on a 2310?

California - thank you for the diagram. Looks like the option is not on my unit. Not sure that I'll need it. Our winter temps do dip into the teens, but rare. Can always heat up the shop a bit I suppose if I find it to be a problem. Block heater? Curious what your cold start experiences have been in Sonoma area?

This is a mild climate so I'm not the right person to answer re cold weather. Low 40's and 100% humidity is the lowest I've started it and that wasn't a problem.

Here's a thread I started last winter re starting.

Sound file posted - cold start and Yanmar Hammer

Note my last post in that thread is a correction - I discovered my ignition switch was wired to heat the thermostart in 'start' position as well as 'TS' position, so any cranking helps heat the manifold.

I use universal in my rig with the "v" loader.

That sounds just like my 1700. When I first got it I thought something was wrong with it. Sounds like someone banging on on manhole cover with a sledge hammer. I gets that is why they nicknamed it Yammer Hammer. It does get quieter when it warms up though

Hey Bruce,

The thermostart plug will screw into the intake manifold. There should be a fuel line which extends from the thermostart plug (it's like a cig lighter coil) to a smallish fuel tank that is attached to a framework on the cylinder head. From there, there should be a line connected to a high-plug on your fuel tank and a another connecting to in-line injectors on the top of the cylinder. I'll try and take pictures of what htis looks like on my 1601. I had to reconstruct the whole setup on my 1601 since it didn't come with it, some may laff, but it is doing the job...

Will you have problems starting? I've spent sometime in both WA and OR and I'd say that your temperatures and humidity are similar to what I have in MA. So, with that said, without aid, you'll have trouble. From about Nov 'til April we have either raw damp cold weather to freezing very cold weather. Without thermostart, my tractor won't start, sometimes even after heating under a tarp with an electric or oil heater. This maybe a symptom of the refurb units we have since others have less problems...

I'm going to go and take some pics, should be back shortly with more detail... -Art

...........I'm back... here are some pics... There are several, so bear with me. I feel obligated to perform the description since I tortured all about this topic a year ago!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Shown here is the thermostart fuel bottle, a must for this system!
