Thanks again to all who responded to my earlier questions on this machine -2310D. After picking it up this weekend I have a couple more questions/comments:

1. Types of Manuals available?... Shop, Parts, Operator - and best place to find them... http://hoyetractor.com/?

2. Noticed the PTO shaft free spins in PTO neutral.. No torque though, can be stopped w/ 1 hand. Some PTO systems have neutral adjustments for this. All 4 PTO ranges are fine. Any comments to free spinning?

3. Charging voltage appears to be unregulated (or if regulator present, then inop. Voltage floats upwards of 15vdc like the cheap lawn/yard tractors do. Does the 2310 in fact have an actual regulator for control of charge V+? Not concerned if no regulator present, as I can design one in easily. Alternator looks pretty tiny - found the full wave bridge rectifier in the wiring harness going into the firewall, and it appears to be low duty also, so I expect the charging amperage on this system to be quite small - under 10 amps?

4. The following sound correct? Hydraulic fluid PTO/trans reservoir takes Universal Tractor Fluid? Front tires 40psi and rear 20psi?

5. For those of you w/ 2310s, at what low temps do you have cold start problems? What start-up procedure do you use? No glow plugs on this unit, rather uses a chamber with heater wire? Would appreciate some more dialogue on this. Absent the manual I'm asking these dumb questions.

6. Also noticed there does not appear to be a check plug for identifying the min/max level for trans/PTO fluid. Refill cap on top of trans allows for visual into gear box, but no dipstick present. What level check do you use on the 2310?

I have a 2310D and live in western Washington I assume that where you are from, so the starting issues would be the same.
Here is my two cents worth on your questions.
1. Mine came with manuals but I have heard that Hoyle tractor has complete sets. I have a parts and operators manual. The parts manual discriptions are not in english but the part numbers are. The operators manual has a basic service section.
2. The PTO spins due to friction of the cold oil, once the oil heats up it stops.
3. There is a voltage regulator on the fire wall upper left side. There is not an alternator as such but a dynamo(sp),It charges at 14 volts AC. Not a lot of amperage but seems to do the job. Mine holds a fairly constant voltage around 14 volts.
4. The manual says only Transmission-Hydraulic oil. No light weight hydraulic fluid. I think that universal tractor fluid is ok. The container I have from Cenex says it is approved for transmissions.
5. I have not had to use the heater as of yet except to play with it. Mine starts with out the heater in The upper 30 Degree range. I used the heater yesterday and didn't today It started about the same. It smoked slightly more with out the heater.
6. There should be a dipstick on the cap on top of the transmission case.

Bruce,
I see you bought the vietnamese reconditioned machine, usually a dealer will supply their customers with free manuals. I would call your dealer back & ask him for a set (for free) of course.
good luck Ernie

You bought this vietnam rebuild knowing it had these problems ? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

What "problems"? I didn't see any "problems" in the above.

Thanks for the question Ken. No, as there is no instrumentation on a Yanmar that reveals an overcharge state, I determined this after the sale. It's actually something that is easily missed because the overcharge occurs only at higher engine speed, not at idle or even elevated idle, and because the dynamo is current limited anyway the symptom is load dependent. No problem - the dealer is replacing the regulator. Had I taken the DVM with me for an "all points check" on the electrical prior to purchase I would have discovered this earlier.

I did receive a helpful note from a fellow WA State forum member (captain71c ) who shared some genuinely helpful info on each of my other questions, and that is very much appreciated.

Then you didn't read # 1 or # 3. PTO turns out of gear, voltage reg. not working properly or not installed. I would have had these things repaired b- 4 buying the tractor.(If purchased from a dealer.) I do hope all turns out ok for you as far as your dealer making all repairs for you. Good luck .

Ken -

When I purchased this tractor I had no manuals. As for the PTO free spinning it was not doing so at the time (see response from captain71c) Third, I was not aware of the voltage regulator on the firewall, nor did I probe the electrical system with a DVM. Not all charging systems even use VRs. Many float the charging voltage off either magnetos or dynamos. Yes, the dealer is making good on replacing the VR.

I'm not sure I understand the point you're expressing.

You will discover there are some members here who are concerned about the quality of the VN 'new, rebuilt' tractors as well as the quality of dealer prep performed by the importers.

My own opinion is that buying one of these is somewhat of a gamble, but with the odds good enough to make it well worth the gamble. The posts here indicate that nearly all customers get fair value perhaps needing to do some minor final finishing like your VR. These aren't new tractors, they are old ones tested and repainted, suitable mainly for the customer (you included) who already knows enough to perform minor troubleshooting on unfamiliar equipment.

Occasionally someone posts that they were badly ripped off because the tractor had expensive faults and the dealer says tough luck. I think that is a real risk, one that the customer should consider in determining how much to pay. You would face the same risk buying non-reconditioned equipment of similar age at auction or from a used equipment dealer.

I think one indicator of a dealer who doesn't have his heart into after-sales service is not including manuals. It seems like a clear message that the new owner is on his own to figure out operation and maintenance.

Then the new owner comes here, and those dealers who do provide manuals and advice are asked to provide information that the selling dealer didn't provide. No wonder they add a few digs at their competitor who made an incomplete sale.

Anyhow, I expect your unit will turn out to be everything you hoped it would be. Welcome to the community of Yanmar owners!

California - thank you for the welcome to the forum. Point above well taken. No argument there. Had my schedule and location offered other options I would have taken the time to follow-up on some of the sincere suggestions made by this forum to consider other choices.

I'm happy to share the good and the bad on this, which can only serve everyone better in making their source selections. thanks again.

I think to add to California's comments and to others reagrding VN "rebuilds" is it seems there is the real possibility that these tractors have been assembled from various tractors and models and anything that fits could be combined.

I live not too far from tractor Ernie, bought my tractor from him as well. He has told me stories on several occassions about receiving a request for a specific part for a specific model and then after sending, getting a call from customer saying "what gives?, the part doesn't fit my tractor." Turns out the part in question wasn't the OEM part for the tractor.

If this is the case with a tractor you own, it could become an issue somewhere down the road. Don't think there was anything personal with some of the critical comments.

Just to clarify my comment on "problems" above, BruceT has already been hammered about the risks of buying a Vietnamese "recon" tractor just a few threads down. He checked it out (in accordance with the risk comments), he bought it, he seems happy with it, and he's not complaining to anyone about its condition (do I read you right, Bruce?).....just asking typical tractor ownership questions. I agree that a new forum member should be warned of the risks once, but to re-hash the same issues really gets old and is not helpful in any way.

Perfectly Bill, thank you. Perhaps if I had learned to use those smiley faces, then there would not have been a question.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm happy to share any & all experiences with this machine, and I believe that is what the forum's goals are.

I know I sure get tired of hearing the recon(salvaged) debate. It is really transparent to us dealers though. We have to deal with this subject everyday day in and out. We see the blatant lies and misrepresentation by salvage dealers then we wind up picking up the pieces for them to keep our good names. I really truly believe that most recon dealers believe what they are telling the customers, but I also know people believe what they want to believe regardless of facts and dealers are no different.

I can sell anything I want. I have been approached by every Vietnam company out there. I have visited their plants in Vietnam. Does anybody really think I would endure 20 hour one way plane flights flying back and forth to Japan each month fighting seemingly never ending jet lag, away from my wife and son to purchase tractors if I could buy a better product from Vietnam?

I stopped selling Chinese tractors for the same reason I can’t sell Vietnam salvaged tractors. It is an inconsistent product that is overall junk. I know that sounds harsh but EFC is primarily a grey tractor service facility and we see lots of Vietnam machines from the inside out. I see the hand made parts and I am not talking about hood ornaments I am talking about gears. The day Vietnam actually remanufactures a tractor everyone will know because it will cost more than a new one.

I am really glad Bruce found the tractor he wanted and I honestly hope it never has a problem. I am a big believer in supporting the dealer that is close to you. Competition is good for customers and dealers. As long as Mitch supports his salvaged tractors I have no problem with him selling them. The day they start coming to me for parts and service or the brand name starts to suffer that’s when I feel comfortable calling a spade a spade. I have had to support Mitch’s tractors and many other dealers’ tractors, which I will continue to do, but you cant expect me to support salvaged equipment and listen to the rhetoric at the same time without speaking out….That would make my head explode!!!

We should all support Bruce like any other Yanmar buyer. After all anybody that would own an IH300 (one of my favorite tractors) and would buy a grey market tractor is our kind of guy!! J Remember he could have bought a New Holland.

Thanks Buck, I have to add that this compact won't ever replace the IH300. As difficult as it can be to drive and maintain, it will always be doing the tough chores on this farm. Thanks for sharing your feelings respectfully on this topic.

I took these pick last trip. This was one of three headed to Vietnam. These were the only tractors that were in one piece out of 24.

Buck - now that's a pretty picture. The loader looks good on that tractor, and I expect the IH300 steering responds gratefully to you on a daily basis for not loading it down more than it is already. Yours looks to be in pretty good shape.

Mine... eh, not so good. Sure could use pwr steering. My poor steering box! Currently I have the hydraulic pump (std engine mounted) off for main shaft seal replacement. I'm sure you've heard this before... "I was dumpin hydraulic fluid into the crankcase."

Hope to have it back up running here shortly. Thanks for sharing those pics.
