2 Stumps In One Bite Of The Monster Grapple

Number 1 is the stump from the smaller tree that broke in the previous post. Number 2 is a small stump cut off flush a long time ago:

Yep, it will, but I wouldn't want to.

Here is a start, didn't want to go any higher with the rear, might lose oil pressure:

Look at the bright side.
You did not get hurt (I hope.)
The machine is strong enough to get you in trouble.
You and it will live to tell more stories!

Tell us this story, Please.

PS
While you at it, might as well service the swing gear/motor while it is easy to get at the service access plate.

Brandi, I see this "Tracks Pointing Up" picture just happened two weeks ago, where's the thread? What's the story?

I was over at a friend's new property taking out trees for a driveway and a house. 8-19-18 Cat Digging First Bigger Tree For Kimberly's Driveway.jpg8-19-18 CAT Starting Tree Digging For Kimberly's Driveway.jpg8-19-18 CAT Moving Stump For Kimberly's Driveway.jpg While loading on the trailer to go home, the main hose from the pump to the valve bank blew and I lost hyd. pressure. I was just about on the trailer where I chain it down, when I saw ground inside my right track. Next thing I knew, I was stepping out the slideup windshield opening on the side of the ditch. When an excavator loses hyd pressure, the parking brakes do not engage. I tried to swing the boom around to stop my fall, but with low pressure there also, it just acted as an anchor.8-31-18 CAT On Her Side Rear View.JPG8-31-18 CAT Boom On The Ground.jpg

I went home, got the Mahindra and kept thinking something would need to pull from the tow eye, while I lifted the boom with the FEL on the Mahindra. A dumptruck stopped by and said he could pull it after he got fuel. By then I had clearing trees for the Mahindra to position to lift the boom. I lifted the boom two feet by myself, looked at my friend and said,,,,,,,,"I'm gonna try it now". The Mahindra lifted (flipped?) the CAT back upright all by herself!8-31-18 CAT Back Upright.jpg

While lifting, I busted (sheared the bolt) the mount for the right boom light guard and tweaked the thumb and stick lines. The sight glass tube on the fuel tank came off, dumping 30 gallons of diesel while on it's side and the tank was tweaked on it's mounts. The hyd. tank didn't budge!

I was afraid it had caved in the radiator louvers into the radiator, but those were fine also. The light guard on the fuel tank is loose. I must have fell on the right sliding window, as the forward one was half out of the track. I tried to pop it back into the track with a 3 inch round cedar post, but it wasn't plexiglass like I thought. Yep, I shattered the glass into thousands of little shards.

The next weekend I replaced both pump hoses and took out 6 more trees before the stick cylinder hose blew. It showered the cab and my feet with fluid. Seems I missed the tweaked hard line, when checking for damage, which pulled the hose too tight with the stick fully retracted. I changed that line Friday, between rain storms and with my seatbelt on, loaded her up and brought her home.

Yesterday I paid $65 for a 30x36 inch of 1/4 lexan to make the new sliding window. It is amazing and shamefull how, it the heat of the day (around 95 and humid) and adrenaline flowing how you can compound your errors and make things worse.

I didn't know it until two days after that my right thigh got bruised bad when it hit the throttle T handle. Seatbelts now for loading and unloading.

Our old machines hydraulic lines are sketchy. I sure would not want to be in an airplane with old hydraulic lines. It would be thousands of dollars changing out lines on an old machine.
We just have to be careful.

Lines (hard) are a "remove on condition" part of the airplane. Hoses are a different matter. Aircraft hoses never see the light of day or weather like our ex's hoses.

Komastsu is built very well. Had a lot of computer stuff for 1997! Must have been state of art when new. When the electronics, proximity switches , etc went, It became manual.
I like to offset boom, blade & Hyd. thumb, and being zero swing it goes in the woods where it really should not venture.

Not the strongest machine in the world.
Boom lift and Bucket breakout are average for size. Dipper and brute tractive drawbar just a little weak, but not horrible but the swing torque is just weak, say compared to a BobCat, Hitachi, or Takeuchi. I guess Cats are about the same but have more swing torque.
For a worn out machine , it is smooth to operate.
Moved a lot of rock, & built lots of walls.
I know your Mahindra is bigger than my little but stout L39, so I'm impressed you were able to get your old CAT back right side up wit the big red one.

I do use my tractors more than the excavator now, as our place is +90% established. A wall came down, I should be out on it now. Excavators are handy.

If I were rich I have the subject of this thread as another toy, i.e. Compact telehandler or a MECALAC 1 MCR - YouTube! Gee and a big skid steer, Dozer, Dump truck, Trailers, Etc.

Little but stout. I rented a L39 loader backhoe before and that description fits.

I lucked out on the lift,....having the tracks in the ditch and the boom up on the bank. The Mahindra's loader will lift 3900 pounds to 13 something feet, so physics and terrain helped in up righting the CAT. She only weighs 14,500 pounds. How much does your Komatsu weigh?

Near as I can figure 17,500Lbs with Blade, thumb, and steel tracks.

Hi Brandi,

Also glad you're OK, and sounds like it was a cheap and relatively easy way to get that lesson learned!

Thanks for the details, and cautionary tale- hopefully some of can learn vicariously from it.

A recent project, moving a spare parts Groundsmaster from the shop to the shed.

The pallet rack in the shed. Hard to believe, but I never got it filled up. :D
