The reasoning back then was that (1) if an officer on duty got into a shooting situation, he would not have hearing protection, and (2) he might need to hear other sounds or people in the area at the time. I've been wearing hearing aids in both ears now for 18.5 years. And back then, I didn't mind shooting the K model .38 with a 4" barrel; more of a boom sound, but the 2" Chief had a sharper crack sound that would make my ears ring for an hour. So I very seldom shot the Chief. But of course, hearing protection is required on the range now, and with good hearing protection, I don't mind the sound of either.

When I was a teenager I was on a rifle team. Indoors. Hearing protection optional. I regret not wearing it much earlier.

What always makes me roll my eyes is movies where there is a running gun battle inside a building. People are blasting away with hand cannons and automatic weapons. Then one guy runs down a dark hallway and the other guy chases him. They go in and out of offices and end up in a barn or warehouse. Both are stalking each other. Then one of them steps on a twig and the other one hears him.... HAHAAHAaaa!!!! You shoot off that many rounds out of that big of a gun and all you are going to hear is that continuous ring in your ears for a LONG time.

Oh man you have hit on one of my pet peeve's I know what you mean, You ever put off a big gun in a building you are going to be deaf as a post for a while, and probably do permenant hearing damage. But not in the movies.
And back in the day (1970's) when I was a duputy, we didnt wear no "stinkin" hearing protection.. I am kinda deaf now too. I dont know if its from qualifiying or just the normal shooting I done back then, without hearing protection.. I try to wear double protection indoors, now, and preserve what little hearing I have left. We just did not understand the danger then. We know better now

I had my hearing checked a few months ago as part of an examination because I was getting dizzy. If I'd sit up or lie down as soon as I stopped moving everything kept spinning. Exactly like it feels when I'm drunk (as I recall, being 25 years sober :laughing: ). I kind of enjoy the spinning sensation. :dance1:

Anyhow, by the time the appointment came around 3 weeks later, I was no longer dizzy. They think it was some kind of crystal deposit buildup thingy in my ear tubes that control balance and the crystals dissolved themselves.

So, they check my hearing. It was perfect except for the frequency ranges of gunshots and loud music/jet engines. Those areas were quite diminished. So, seeing how I was on a rifle team for a few years indoors, and I worked at the airport refueling jets for 6 years, and I blasted my stereo with lots of rock music and attended many concerts where my ears would ring afterward... I'm pretty sure I did myself in. :laughing:

I usually wore hearing protection at the airport, but sometimes did not. I never wore it when listening to music or attending concerts or operation power tools. For probably the last 15-20 years I have ALWAYS worn hearing protection at concerts, when operating power tools, lawn equipment, my tractor, firing range, etc... I want to keep what I have left.

Why not just use a S&W 357 or a 45 auto, they are more accurate than the cop derringer and they carry a few more bullets?

In the dark the cop derringer throws a heck of a fireball ... that would blind you after the first round.

If you are wanting it for the cool factor, that's OK too.

When things go bump in the dark I want every advantage !

He's right, I have had a cop for many years. I shot at a coon in our trash barrel one night, it blinded me for a few minutes miss the coon but I think I burn most of his hair off. They don't have a safety but the trigger pull is so great it would take a strong woman to use one.

Hi Soundguy, I have a COP carried it for a few years and its a very unique handgun. That being said, the reasons I quit carrying it are

1. As was mentioned before the trigger pull is terrible, that is the safety device for this gun as mentioned in the owner manual.

2. Muzzle flash when using .357s is excessive

3. Recoil is extreme with heavy .357s

4. The last and most importantly is its very hard to hit what your shooting at unless you are uncomfortably close.

As a note I haven't carried it for years but I would not part with it because of its unique appearance and the looks you get when you are firing at the range. Hope you find one even if its just to add to the collection.:thumbsup:

Funny how after 8 pages of interesting and (to me) very educational information this has swung back to the POB. As I stated early in the thread we don't have the crime rate up here yet, so most people who keep a gun for protection are probably more apt to do more harm than good. I've always held that anyone who keeps a gun for protection needs to practice regularly, and not just in controlled, no stress situations. I don't, which is why my guns are all locked up in the gun cabinet. If things keep going the way they seem to be, that will change and I will be training for my carry permit.
After all, where I live calling 911 is defined as "Dial a Prayer for Police."

statistics don't bear that out. at least not where I live. CCW holders are among the most law abiding section of the population. last time i looked, there were more police accidental self inflicted gunshot wounds per capita than ccw holders
