Cost of Propane

( The CFO called the propane supplier yesterday in preparation of refilling the house tank. She was flabbergasted when they told her that it was $3.11 a gallon. This seems unreal. What are others paying for propane?)

I filled both of my tanks last September for $1.50/gal because I was pretty sure the price of crude oil and natural gas were both going up. In this last week, the price of both has slipped a little, so you might wait a few weeks for that to dribble down the retail side of things. But long term, I expect prices to remain high.

We were advised by our supplier that LPG was likely to go over $2.50/gallon back in September and contracted 500 gal @ 0.95/gal. For future knowledge, you may want to check to see if any of your local suppliers contract winter gas and lock in a price in the fall.

We actually have 3 tanks on the property.... 500 gal. on the house (kitchen stove and two room heaters, but oil is main heat source), 1000 gal on the generator, and 500 gal on the pool heater (short season here /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ). We use about 2-300 gal a year total. The generator tank was filled when we bought the property 4 years ago and it's still 3/4 full. We use about 100 gal. a year for the house. I should have bought mid summer when the prices were down. I'll remember that next year.

Wow. I locked in at 1.55

If I had to do 3-4 a gallon I'd be having a hard time sleeping.

We'd hang the wash out on the line even it it was freezing. The pellet stove would be working overtime and cooking in the oven would be offlimits. The microwave would be cranking.

I just had 100 gallons delivered 2 days ago, at $2.31 a gallon. This is at our lake house, and since we don't use enough to qualify for the "lock in" rate, we have no choice. That much usually lasts us around 10 or 11 months.

( Seems like I remember that propane weighs 4.25 pounds per gallon. Since you can't fill a propane tank to 100%, a 100 pound tank will hold something like 19 to 21 gallons. )

To my knowledge, LP tanks hold 80% of tank size. My 500 gallon tank when full has approximately 400 gallons worth of fuel.
I just paid $2.189 about three weeks ago. They don't price lock /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Gerard

The higher the quantity you buy, the lower the price you pay. They have charts that they go by. The charts change (price wise) as they see/feel fit /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. Gerard

Yes, If you go over a certain amount you get a reduced rate, but a $1 or more a gallon difference is beyond reasonable.

I totally agree, but what are we to do about it? We need to be supplied so they can demand $'s /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Gerard

Greed has got out of hand in a lot of American businesses. Profit is one thing, but greed is another.
