I met with the excavator again this evening and went over the project again. The yardage will work out fine with the amount of fill and grading we want to do. So far his references are checking out good and the contract looks good. I'll check more references tomorrow.

I'll attach some pics of the area. I need to doctor them up a bit first.

The pond incorporates a creek from the center of the land as well as along a hillside. It's sort of l-shaped and measures about 301'x60'x160'x85' where the narrow ends are the 60'w at the apartment and 85'W at the holler. The pond will be 9' deep +/-. Eventually, the buildings out from will be taken down, leaving the driveway and pond out front.

This is the front site.

Property looks just beautiful. Make sure you take pictures during construction. Here is a link to pictures of my construction last fall. Larry's pond

When my pond was dug they used 14-yard scraper to move most of the dirt, and a bulldozer and grader for finish-up. They used the spoils for my pad, but didn't use dump trucks. Instead, they just drove the full scraper over to the pad location and dumped it there on every pass, then dumped some for the dam, etc. They also used a lot of material behind the dam so that it has a gradual slope and looks very natural.

Could be they have further to move the dirt in your case.

Okay, I should have gone to bed, but I went through the whole thread, and there isn't a picture to be seen of the completed project, waterfall and all. Alright, GIVE. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
What a beautiful location. John

Aw shucks John /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif So many projects so little time. My mind moves faster than either my hands or my equipment. The fountain is in, but my problem is 1) haven't completed running the electricity the 600 feet to the pond to power the pumps and 2) and engineering issue with the waterfalls. I had bought this pump thinking it would od the job and after further reseach an consultation I woefully underestimated my pumping needs. I have learned that to make a waterfall look good you need between .5 to 1" of water flowing over it continuously. OKwhat does that mean? You need to produce 30 - 60 GPM per foot of waterfall. Well I had designed my waterfall to be 40 feet wide (my eyes and ambitions are bigger than my budget!) that would mean that I need 2,400 GPM to do this and doing the math that is 144,000 GPH. No way no how. So I have had to scale back my plans and size of the waterfall significantly. I also needed to get a medium head pump. That should be here in a week when I get the electricity in so stay tuned. Thanks for asking /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Larry - I went through your thread before. That is a nice place you have! We were considering some sort of waterfall as well. We're also wanting to put in a fountain, probably 2 tiered. Is there a good place to get those fountains on the net?

Alan
The fill needs to be moved btween 300 and 600 feet.
There should be enough dirt to make our pond blend in naturally also.
I'm taking lots of pics for a nice digital photo album of the construction.
I have around 70 pics on my camera yet to be dumped onto the computer (mostly of us putting in those 4' culvert joints!)

Those pictures sure look familiar; about like what we usually see in West Virginia when we go up there in October.
