You need to watch out for those big kitty's. From what I could read the "low information voter" female who first got out of the car survived with grave injuries but her mother who got out of the back seat to save her brain dead child was killed by the cat.

Show us where they said it didn't happen, please.
Sorry...I didn't save any articles of their denials, just going from memory a few years back on that SD cat that was later killed in CT (that's a lot of miles). Wasn't anything sinister in the denial, they just thought it was implausible. We've had a few other ones since then but they were caught on cameras.

I live in a part of Illinois that has had sightings for a few years. As far as I know, no trail camera pics yet but I don't doubt there are a few out there. I work with someone that got a bobcat on his trail camera, so thats also a new thing to this area.

The bobs are expanding their range a lot. They were once restricted to the north woods but "harvest" was always based on very conservative estimates and the excess got "kicked out" of their home range. In Wis we had the same thing with bears (you can probably expect to see them soon if you haven't seen them yet...at one time restricted to the forest the conservative harvest limits forced them south...then they got into "corn country"...whereas twins were common, now we see triplets, quads and often quints...plenty of food for mom). I'll add that you might soon be looking at wolves. Forget about coyotes...that war was lost a long time ago. As for the cougars, they all seem to be merely "passing through". Those things seem to put on a lot of miles.

Lots of coyotes in my area, and I do mean a lot. Bears? I hadn't even thought of that. I still haven't seen a bobcat, the buddy that got it on a trail cam was about 15 miles away from me and it was a heavily wooded area.

The mascot for Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville is the Cougar. When I was there in the mid-'80s, they still had a couple of live mascots on the campus. Their handlers would occasionally walk them through the campus. I was sitting on a bench in the University Center one day when they walked in with both of them. One came over and put its head in my lap, so I started scratching her head ... fortunately in all the right places. She didn't want to leave. Man, are those some big cats!

Now, I've always been a cat person, but there's no way I'd ever want to encounter one of those in the wild, especially at night.

We have had bobcats in our area of southwestern Illinois for as long as I can remember, Dave. I saw one on the side of US-50 just east of Trenton one evening about 5 years ago, standing on a hill looking down into the ditch, probably at whatever was going to be dinner that night. They're not exactly small cats either.

No bears? Look at a map of Wisconsin and find Verona (south west of Madison)! They are heading south. They are very territorial animals and once kicked out by Mom (2 years) are forced to find new ground. Bobs apparently are the same...Wis hunting has recently added a few southern zones for those critters after years of debate over the need. We hit a record high wolf population while the whole thing keeps getting dragged back into court. I'm sure I've seen wolf scat in an area not far from the Ill border.
