CurlyDave, for a firebreak... goats.... goats... goats.... spanish goats... you know the ones that come in lots of colors, short hair. Fence the area properly... keep goats in... they are EXTREMELY HARDY.... water, salt, green stuff to eat.. they will eat everythinbg they can reach standing on their hind legs... it leaves a barren ground area and bare tree trunks up as high as they can reach. Get several nannys and a billy.. you will have a heard (yep, they bleat all the time) explosion, they usually have twins, often triplets... terminally cute little buggers. If coyotes prove to be a problem, get a donkey, they keep coyotes away as well. Cheaper than an exotic critter.

Llama's & goats get along. Llama's are sort of like the donkey, they will kill anything that gets next to the goat herd.

Well, I talked about it with my wife.

She likes donkeys more than llamas, so it will probably be a donkey. Actually she says she likes donkeys and doesn't like llamas. I kind of liked the idea of an exotic critter, but not enough to take a stand on it.

You can adopt donkeys from the US BLM. I would get a pair. They are Heard animals.
