In regards to older power tools being better.

I got this 1/2" drill from my friend the "scrap iron" guy. I saw it laying in a huge pile of metal to be hauled to the shredder. Asked him how much he wanted for it, he said take it, doubt I have more than 50 cents invested. I gave him $10. Works like a champ.

To my point, I never considered Black & Decker a high quality tool manufacturer. But back when they produced this Drill they were. What it lacks is reversibility. Very few had that feature then.

You can bet it cost a pretty penny too...

In my teens I would ask for tools for Christmas/Birthdays and just about all of it Sears "Best"...

My rollaway, table saw, hand tools, drills, saws, engine tester, floor jack, air compressor, first paint gun, sand blaster, etc...

Also did a lot of painting to make money and always Sears Paint...

Part of the reason is Sears was near enough to ride over on my bike as was radio shack....

I'm sure Eddie Walker shopped Southland Mall too.

I took two rathchets into sears today and no question asked, they pulled two rebuilt US matched ratchets from a drawer and handed them too me..

Got one the same way. out of a shop's trash bin!
They said take it!

My best spray gun came to me same way only I purchased a kit and re built it.
Owner (a friend) said it was no use as no painter wanted to use it so he tossed it.

Several of my implements were purchased from the scarp yard. Best score being a 12' tandem wheeled disc that needed a cylinder and two bearings, $114.

Same thing, and if they are not fully torqued the seals will leak oil into the brakes!

Nice that you have your grandfather's and father's tools. I, as well, and often when I reach for one, a fond memory comes back and makes me smile. Happens to my wife too, but it's usually reaching for a piece of her mother's or grandmother's china. Heirlooms can come in different forms!

As a kid I was more into doing the work than preserving the tools. Our driveway was dirt and often things would get lost for awhile then found rusted. I don't have as many as I could of had but things like that are lost on kids. My grandfather would mark his tools with a K for Karl. Most of his stuff is stored as I have more than one duplicate. I have an old Black and Decker 3/4" drill from the 30s hanging on the wall in my garage. It's a beast.

My Son now has a sign hanging over his shop man door that says "Nothing causes Dad's anger more than tools carried out this door". He has 4 boys to deal with......

Same here, looked like it had been used as a hammer and chrome was pealing. I asked for a NEW one and they refused. Mine was in better shape externally. I should have waited until they had a better selection of USED/repaired ratchets, but it was a 35 mile trip I don't often make.

My store will repair yours right on the spot as long as they aren't too busy.
