Dangerous times even in small town

Here's a funny but true story.
Around here people target practice a lot. I grew up with guns and have them but never got into hunting or target practice. I do kill varmints occasionally here.
I'm far from a gun expert.
A couple years ago I bought a Ruger .243, a good Bushnell scope and a box of Winchester shells. The gun store bore sited it I believe it's called.
I've always had a very steady hand. At home here I set up a target and it was 2" to the right exactly.
Next day I heard my neighbor friend shooting, so I take it over. He had a target set up at 70 yards. This fellow has been hunting as a kid...shoots all the time.
So I took aim, compensating 2" to left. I shoot, he looks with binoculars saying he thought I missed the target. We walk up and it's through the bullseye. I told him I compensated, he said not to do that and adjusted site for 2". I shoot again this time I aimed for dot. Again we walk up...it went though the same bullseye hole. He said that was dumb luck...third time same bullseye. He got pixxed!
To me it's easy if you get it exactly in the crosshairs.

challenge for me to carry is one of my jobs is driving a school bus - can't take a gun on the bus, school property, etc. Can leave it in the car I suppose.
Next is i'm 5 mi from ohio and 10 from WV. Ohio now has reciprocity, but they have rules/laws about carrying..not sure other than not in a bar (pa has no such law).

And getting busted likely means losing your guns/right to own and buy guns.

Sure, odds are small that anything will happen - but you can't always avoid a car accident or breakdown or other health concern and you end up with cops and your gun in a place it's not supposed to be.

BTW, I use a desantis pocket holster and a glock 43. Never know I have it on/with me. Not the fastest place to keep it,but very concealed. Mugging Me? OK, let me get my money, it's in my front pocket...no mugger will will reach in there and if he does he's close enough to my victim.

We (law abiding) have a lot to lose... our reputation, our guns, our money, family, etc, etc. Plus we submit to a hefty federal background check.

lawful gun owners are not a problem.

Yeah. Land of the FREE ! LOL

Heck, we own rural vacant land about 9 miles outside of town. Right after we bought it back around 1990, I struck up a conversation with the lady that lived across the street. I told her it will be nice when we are able to build a house out here in the country and move out of the city, as we no longer felt safe in our city house. She looked at me kinda sad and said her husband was knocked unconscious and robbed in their driveway a few years before. :(

Criminals have cars.

Not only that, they often prey on people in places more out of the way, thinking that law enforcement will be more lax (well, it is. rural police are few and far between). They often cook meth out in the bush, (yes they cook in town too, but smart ones get away from people because of the smells that cooking meth brings). They grow MJ out here. That is pretty obvious. All of that puts criminals out here too.

3 years ago we thru a birthday party for my daughter. As the parents were dropping off kids my wife butt dialed 911 and didn't realize it. TWENTY MINUTES later 2 cop cars rolled up, no lights, and said "911 got a call with screaming in the background and the caller was unresponsive"

Hmm...to me that would be a red flag emergency...how about you?

But it took 20 minutes to show up, and then they were in no hurry. This is a rural/suburban area (aka no crime to speak of)

It really isnt sticky. You must know deadly force laws in your state if you intend to use deadly force. In this case, he knew why they were there (to take possessions). He could not prove his life was in any danger. If your life isnt in danger you really cant start shooting people in most states. This is likely why he is in prison.

Laws are different in every state. Here in Alabama we have what is called a castle law, it applies to your home or vehicle. If they break into either one with you in it , you have the right to use deadly force.

20 minutes is pretty much the normal response time around here in rural areas.

Yeah, and if you shoot the town's crackhead no big deal. If it's the pastor's son then maybe not so easy.

Look at cops that shoot perps..legally..and still face a poopstorm.

And who are YOU? A 70 year old 90 lb partly disabled man will get away with shooting a 20 year old where you, perhaps a 36 yr old 6' 250lb farmer will have a much harder time saying you were scared for your life/safety.

the biggest threat is often in our own homes - do you carry 100% of the time at home? Most don't - you fee safe in your home. Sure, the gun is the bedroom..butyou're at hte back door because 2 guys that look like mormons or utility workers are knocking at 10 am...you don't feel threatened.

I feel sorry for people that live in constant fear.

I have a cc permit and have fallen out of the habit of carrying due to the socialist republic of Illinois where I work. I live in south St. Louis county, but work in Alton IL.

I drive through some very bad neighborhoods...east St. Louis being the main one. My cc permit is worthless in that state. You have to basically disassemble your weapon and store half in the trunk and the other half in a lockbox inside the vehicle. What good does that due me?

My drivers license is accepted over there...but not a cc permit...go figure.
