As far as feeling sorry for people that live in fear.
Actually at one level or another you describe most of humanity.

No matter what the law is in your state or region if you shoot somebody you should expect your life to change, and not for the better.
The NRA offers or offered insurance in case that does happen but I'm not sure that it's still available.
I have never given money to panhandlers. I make donations to the Salvation Army, Lutheran Charities and a few other organizations; not that I'm religious, but those groups tend to pass more of my money along to the people who I intend it to go to.

Can't you just picture all the Cockroaches coming out of the woodwork to file a civil suit against you for killing their breadwinner?

Laws are different in every state. Here in Alabama we have what is called a castle law, it applies to your home or vehicle. If they break into either one with you in it , you have the right to use deadly force.

This must be what you are referring to.

Alabama Stand Your Ground - Castle Doctrine Law

Even if you are justified, You can expect a lawsuit.

I would highly recommend you to look into either USCCA, or SDA insurance in case you have to defend yourself. It's cheaper than you would pay in attorney fees

I forgot to mention spineless! Speaking of which, our PM is off at the G20 "fighting" for gender equality! I hope he doesn't get hurt or that his eyebrows fall off his face like at the last meeting!

The Mexican Mennonites that work up here have a huge bottle of Tobasco sauce in the lunchroom that they use on everything!

Oh my oh my.....you are picking on the one my Alberta friend calls .... "clown boy"

Being from a small town I and my wife always had a hard time turning panhandlers down. That is slowly changing.

About 10 years ago as we would grocery shopping in Florida City, FL we would always get hit on by panhandlers wanting money. My wife thought it would be a better idea if we would just give them food from the shopping bags after we went shopping or at least keep a few items in the truck. I agreed.

A couple weeks later while grocery shopping she left the store pushing the cart and I was shuffling along about 75 feet behind her, just strolling along. She gets to the truck and a panhandler sort of met her there. She asked it if food would be okay and he didn't have a problem with food instead of cash. My wife, "Miss Situational Awareness," turned her back to the guy and started digging around in a bag we had for such occasions and he was standing about 3 feet in back of her, patiently waiting. I was closing slowly, nothing happened but I could have been pouncing on him in about 3 seconds. I made the decision that that was the last time for panhandlers as far as I was concerned.

But then a couple weeks later in at the same store I was parked in a place to get a good view of the parking lot as I waited for her to get groceries. I did notice this one panhandler would come up to people for money or whatever and I noticed he would always take the carts and push them up to the store in his down time. With him, as I was leaving I drove past him, rolled down my window and gave him a couple bucks. I told him he was working to hard.

That would never happen here as they simply load up shopping carts and push them right out the door unimpeded... store policy is not to confront...

I alerted the manager that two guys were loading up a shopping cart with steak and Tide and Pampers... sure enough... went right out the entrance with a full cart.

Not too long ago... a store employee saw a woman getting her purse snatched... he tackled the perp and held for law enforcement... he was fired on the spot for not following company policy... 11 years on the job.

There was such a public and media outcry... he did get his job back... he said how much he loved his job and his coworkers and how grateful he was for a second chance...

It is not isolated...

Saturday night the wife and I along with our neighbors went out for dinner and a movie. When we came out of the movie there were several cop cars and an ambulance right in front of the theater. It seems several people were outside waiting for something (maybe a ride) when 4 guys in a white car zipped up, jumped out and mugged one of the girls and then drove off. She was knocked to the ground and knees were skinned up but otherwise appeared OK.
Crooks are getting very brave to do that right in the middle of town and in front of a well lit theater parking lot.

My neighbor and I both have CCW permits and just recently started carrying full time. We have had our permits for several years but just rarely carried. Now I carry when I go out-my neighbor puts his on when he gets up in the morning and keeps it on all day. I am not quite to that point yet but Saturday night made me a believer in CCW if out in town.

The biggest reason for not carrying full time was lack of a comfortable holster. I have about a dozen different types but none were really comfortable. Finally my neighbor found an elastic belly band type that is really comfortable and holds just about any pistol and all for only $20 with free shipping. I immediately ordered one for myself.

I am glad we were both armed Saturday night but also glad that we weren't targeted. I am sure we would have been involved in a shooting and glad we didn't have to go through that.

Can you share where you got the holster? Thanks.

Not only that, they often prey on people in places more out of the way, thinking that law enforcement will be more lax (well, it is. rural police are few and far between). They often cook meth out in the bush, (yes they cook in town too, but smart ones get away from people because of the smells that cooking meth brings). They grow MJ out here. That is pretty obvious. All of that puts criminals out here too.

Hardly anyone grows marijuana outdoors around here.... it grows wild along the road all over the place. They used to grow it for hemp during the world wars and it never left. There's no money in growing pot around here, and it's no longer the drug of choice. Opioids are where it's at!

The first day my daughter drove by herself after getting he license at 17, she went to Target. For years I've been teaching her about safety, stranger and how this is NOT a friendly world that all kids think it is. Sure I sounded like every "paranoid" Dad telling her about this or that when she gets out on her own.

Sure enough within an hour of her leaving she was on the phone to be crying. Apparently as she was leaving Target a lady approached her for a "ride" and she refused and the lady persisted. She looked over at her vehicle and there was a van parked next to it, so she turned around and went back inside ( like Dad taught her ). Turns out they were a team, the lady and the men inside the van as she saw them all drive off together. She said they were actual gypsies. I flew up there running every red light and breaking every speed law between the store and our house. She was hysterical, and wasn't able to drive si I drover her home and went with the wife later to pick up her car.

She has NEVER rolled her eyes once since that day as I continue to give her life lessons. Kids need to learn on their own as words mean nothing to them, and I'm not so sure I was any different.
