George, I don't know what the "best" size is for the auger, but around here we've used the 6" auger for 4" posts and a 9" auger for 6" posts.

Thanks for the input George. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and check on price.

You should have seen me hooking up the digger for the first time---does a monkey and a football well enough said on that one lets just say it sure didn't go very smooth.

I'm not posthole expert anymore - most of my "postholes" are for trees or shrubs. But in a previous life I put in hundreds of fenceposts. My experience is that if you're putting in posts for dirt tamping, it's best to use an auger as small as the smallest tamper you've got will fit in beside the post (e.g. 2-3" larger than the post, if possible). If you're putting them in concrete, then I like to have about 3" all the way around, so I use an auger about 6" inches bigger than the post. I'm sure others prefer different approaches, though.

Mark, I agree with you about the holes for the dirt. As far as the holes for the concrete, I guess it just depends on how much concrete you want to buy, mix, etc./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I guess the bigger the hole and the more concrete you use, the more solid it will be.

Gordon It's a Bush Hog medium duty. Have a 12" & 9" auger. Unlike MChalkey who I suspect carries his digger to many sites I only use mine on my place. If I had to move about and use I would come up with alternative. Maybe take it off trailer with FEL and hang from gooseneck to connect to 3PH, same principle. I don't know how to put 2 pictures on one post so there will be another picture below that shows closeup. My digital pictures leave a lot to be desired in clarity I'm sure I'm not using the camera correctly. Hope this helps.

McCallum - That's an interesting idea - and a lot less complicated than what I had in mind. I'm wondering if I could rig up something like that using a portable tripod that I could carry from site to site.

McCallum Thanks for the pics they look plenty clear to me. I like the custom digging aid that you added for downforce. Alot like I've got mine set up now. Not the weights but the chain and the tree setup./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Mark When I first got the digger I was trying to hause it around and needless to say it was winning I was gaining but very little. Then I hooked it up to the engine hoist which would have worked fine except the safety factor with kids. The wife had alittle to do with that one./w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif So now its hanging from a tree in the back yard. The portable tripod does sound like a good idea. I'll work on that one.

The main weight is the gear head one idea was to remove the head mount the frame then remount the head. Unsure how hard I haven't tried that one yet. But that does seem like a good idea. Another for temp storage at a jobsite would be to run the auger into the dirt enough to keep the digger in place. So I do believe with alittle of each idea we might be on to something just unsure of what just yet!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

George I priced the adaptor from Bell-tech the list on it is are you sitting down----$125.00-----ouch. I couldn't get any possible discounts when I talked with them because the salesman was in a meeting. Will call again tomorrow. Anyone else have any ideas on the one---going from the 2-9/16" shaft down a 2" shaft. Is it even worth the problem? I'm beginning to believe that I might be better off with the real Danuser augers---guess thats anybodys guess./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gifI've got to do more pricing and look hard at the quality of any two inch augers. I do know that the serrated edges on the auger I've got now do well.

Gordon, Excavation Supply Co., 1-800-624-1727 or Fax 1-800-865-8910, sells augers and tips at good prices. Call and ask for their catalog. Good outfit to do business with.
Bottom line is that they sell all kinds of digger parts for trenchers, back-hoes, tillers, etc.

regards,
george

I hang mine from a tree as well. My dealer sells a stand that is fairly lightweight, but does not look very sturdy either. The tripod idea is interesting.
