You're right! I am not really sweating it. I just hoped to have a good relationship with someone who is almost my next door neighbor. I should also point out that the owner of the dealership there lives about 5 houses on the other side of me. That explains how they knew I had purchased a Kubota before I told the sales guy. The owner may have seen me working with it on his way home.

Well number 1 sometimes when we ask a question we may not give the answer we "expect". Based on what you said and have seen you expected a "yes". You didn't get what you thought, huffed and walked out. You have a new tractor, the others may have been old, we don't know all the details. Maybe the dude was in a bad mood, maybe you were in a bad mood. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But, if you only got a "rather not", isn't that nicer than a "no" or a "heck no" or a "are you joking"? Ok not what you expected but buy your small stuff and walk out with your head up. On other stuff it could have been a great relationship with them. It's just in certain areas they can not meet you needs, perhaps in other areas they meet them better.

I've had my run in with dealers, when I'm standing there and they say $12.50 for a single spray can or Kubota gray and I've bought it at another place for $8 I get boiling under my skin. But why huff out and drive another 25 miles to the other place for $4.50. I may not go back there but I'll try and keep my cool.

Yeah don't sweat it.

I agree with proudestmonkey and I've had done the same thing. Leave and never go back. To me, 'rather not' is worse than a simple no. The guy had a chance to sell supplies, possibly sell an implement or two and get a 50 hour service job on a new tractor (gravy) and he blew it by being a jerk. He may just be the sales guy and he may not represent the dealership as a whole, but no matter who it is, the one dealing with the customer is the one who determines the dealer's reputation.

My experience has been different. I was in the market for a JD 990 or Kubota L4400. It was a toss up on price but Kubota had a better financing deal at the time. When I went by the JD dealer later to look at rotary cutters he wanted to know where I got my tractor. I told him and I told him why. Her said he understood and very happily sold me a mower. I buy supplies there now since it is closer. Two good dealers, both get my business. I now check at the JD place before buying any implement (they get good used stuff). That's the way it should work.

Well, I want to say one more point here.... I'm a service manager and have been for 30 plus years from twisting wrenches to the College classroom and if there is one thing I have learned the hard way is, you never piss a customer off. No matter what the deal, what the circumstances or how angry or ugly a situation becomes even when you know he's wrong, the golden rule is you never piss him or her off. My Sale guys love me because I make their problems go away and still benefit my Company goals with profit simply because I take the time to listen to the needs of the customer and no matter how busy I get...... I try my best to take all the time My customer needs to express himself about our products. I then file a report with engineering about credible concerns to make a better mouse trap whether it's green or orange customer is number one guys /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Proudestmonkey you are a good sport for not loosing your cool with this loser /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think my original post may not have been as clear as it could have been. Neither of us lost our cool. The tone on both ends was pretty matter-of-fact. I wasn't angry. If I was, that would have been different. I didn't know what to expect, actually. What I got was simply dissapointing, seemed kind of petty, and a little rude.

I sell my knowledge and experience to make a buck. For 13 years, I did it as an attorney. Now, I do it as a family therapist. I make sure and tell everyone, "if you think you can find services that suit you better elsewhere, you should make the best choice for you, and there will be no hard feelings on my end." And I mean it. Usually, people appreciate just hearing they can do what they need for themselves, without having to worry about me taking it personally.

This dealer lost my business because he tried to charge me more than what he should have charged for the product he tried to sell. Had he been a little more flexible with the price, I may have bought a tractor for him. Maybe his circumstances didn't allow that. Okay. No hard feelings. He gave me his bottom line, and I got something better elsewhere. But now he's going to hold it against me? Like I said, they work on other makes of tractors, so I don't think it has anything to do with not making as much money on those other brands, etc.

No big deal. I didn't huff out. He walked away. I walked away. And that is his loss because they lost my business. It is, to a lesser extent, my loss, because I have a bad taste in my mouth about a dealer a few hundred feet down the road.
