My deck is redwood. Now the folks on the west coast can buy redwood for what it cost us in the middle of the country for cedar. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
My deck was allegedly a couple of years old when it had to be taken apart for foundation repair. The foundation company took it apart very carefully and banded it into bundles.
It was still in those bundles when I bought it for a couple of hundred dollars some years later. Yup, I got about five thousand square feet of redwood construction heart two by sixes in random lengths for two one hundred dollar bills.
That was fifteen years ago. The deck has been stained twice, about to get sealed again with Penofen. I've replaced two boards due to rot over that time. We've never had a problem with splinters.
I did set up a bead blade in the table saw and the deck looks like quarter inch dowel rod patterned. I wouldn't blink a minute in recommending redwood.
I saw something on H&G TV the other day where someone has a product out that enables one to use twelve inch tiles over a joist system without using any mortar. That might be something to consider. It was like laying out a plastic grid over the joists and the tiles sitting in the grid.
If budget wasn't a large portion of the equasion I'd go with the Brazillian teak mentioned earlier. I've heard its the ultimate deck material and price comparable when you replace the wolmonized a time or two.
