I have a YM1601D (no post hole digger) and am reviewing some plans that require 32 or so holes 18 inches wide and 58 inches deep. This seems like a stretch even if I were to use a 12 inch auger and widen the hole with an 18 inch auger. Would such a wide/deep post hole be even possible with a PHD on the 1601D?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill Vorhies

The local Kubota dealer rents a Landpride post hole digger that has a 24" auger. I think there is such a thing as auger extentions that allow you the dig deeper than the normal 40"-48".

Depending on the soil, it might be possible. Best to go with an 18" from the beginning. I have had little luck in widening holes. But the 3pt hitch only goes up and down about two feet vertically which means that you need removeable extentions every two feet or less. I don't often say this, but it sounds like a good reason to call in a commercial pier-drilling rig. Save the tractor for things that it is sized to do.

I would have to agree on that.. It would be generating more work to do it with the tractor... terrible as it is to say...

I purchased a posthole digger with a 12" auger for my YM2210 last summer to drill 26 holes that were 4 ft deep for deck construction around the house. Our soil is rocky clay here. Some of the holes were even drilled on sloped terrain. It takes some set up time and patience to accurately drill nice holes, but I believe it was worth it. I am certain that a rental would have cost as much or more than the purchase price of the digger. I now own it for future projects.

Again.. deffinately not shying away from tractor mounted impliments..but a hand held motorized post hole digger will cost a little less, in most cases... however one for 18" holes will likely have to be one o fthe '2' man drills... may cost as much as a tractor mounted one.... just have to see if it is feasable.

When i installed my fence.. 525' of it was up against another fence, and the tractor was not available for it.. we used a hand held one with good results. ymmv.

Thank you all for your replies. You have saved me a ton of aggravation. Based on your replies , I have requested that the plans be changed to a trench type foundation that my machine can handle. Looks like I will have to build a deck to get a post hole digger....
