Deer Hunter kills himself after killing friend by accident

this is a myth, I have heard this since I was a small boy. Always someone else was told this. pure BS urban legend. Same as the guy shooting meadowlarks thinking they were doves. Various small changes but always the same story.

Strange as to how that story just won't stop? Keeps on coming like an Eveready battery?

Maybe the storey gets recycled, but I don't know if I'd call it BS. We know people shoot at things just moving in the bush, so a sound shot is not that much different.

Sad to say but we see a few of these accidental shootings in our state almost every year. The only thing I can say is they must have taken a different hunter safety course than I did or had a very lax instructor. We were told numerous times and tested on that fact you must be POSITIVE of your target and what is behind it in case you miss. There was no talk during the course of shooting at sound or movement in the bushes or high grass. You had to be POSITIVE of your target. I took that course many many years ago and still remember the instructor drumming that thought into our heads.
My sympathies goes out to the families but I have no sympathy for anyone who shoots another person they think is a deer.

I'd like to see his blood alcohol level, How do you shoot your hunting buddy when you know he is out there looking for the same deer as you????

Then shoot yourself in front of another buddy.

Something doesn't ad up.

My point exactly!! hmmm.

I guess I know what you mean, and I'm not picking on you personally, but I wouldn't call it an accident. I call it a negligent discharge. While carrying lethal arms, one must force themselves to be diligent and follow strict gun handling procedures. One must always be mindful of the trigger and muzzle direction and not be in a hurry.

Amen brother!

IMHO some game regulations could be changed that just maybe might stop most mistaken shots.
1: never have antlered and antler less seasons at the same time
2: increase the fines for not having blaze orange displayed
this just covers deer season
I cannot see how a person could be mistaken wearing orange. I can see a person clear across a valley wearing orange, can't make out any details but still know its a person. and for all the archery camouflage hunters....deer cannot see orange, it looks like brown to them.
3) for fall turkey have two seasons one for bearded birds one for no beards

Now how can any one complain about this more hunting time because of two seasons. And the kicker is any old deer or any turkey just won't do.
4) mistaken game kills raise the fine on that to. A mistaken game kill could have been a person

Someone wearing hunter orange was shot dead by a hunter in Maine this season already. Bummed me out as I cut wood in the fall, thought I was ok with my orange Kubota and helmet and saw. It's under investigation, haven't heard anything more. A few other shootings as well. It's been pretty good the last few years in Maine, no fatalities. Not sure why it has started again this year. To many morons hunting I guess.

The more I think about this, the madder I get. I'm not a hunter but both my BILs are. I'd be afraid to be out there after hearing all these stories, getting hit with a HP rifle round would really ruin a nice day in the woods.

The first thing you should be thinking when you see movement is, it's probably another human. Don't even think it might be a dear first, as you try to confirm that it is. Think first it's a person, then confirm that it isn't.

Little chance of a mis identification with that way of thinking.

I know that people are shot wearing orange, I just cannot understand how unless it was a stray shot or the orange was covered. The stuff just plain stands out, nothing in nature is that color. I sometimes think some accidents are not "accidents" at all.

I was shot as a kid by overexcited hunter. I lifted a pheasant for him and as the bird was first running and then taking off toward him he shot it low hitting me with three or four pelets. One was in my hand and my mother was spanking me while removing the pelet from the wound because I was told not come even close to the hunt. I was lucky I suppose. If I would be closer I would have quite few holes in me.

Some people just go nuts when hunting season comes along but thankfully they are few in number...I hope! I remember one time a guy I worked with was talking about the soon to be arriving deer season; his eyes actually glazed over and he was almost drooling like a dog seeing an exceptionally tasty treat. It was downright scary and I would NEVER want to be anywhere near him when he is hunting. He would definitely be one to make a "sound shot".
