Deer Hunter kills himself after killing friend by accident

Last time I went hunting, I was on state land, in northern Michigan. I got into the woods well before dawn, to a spot I had selected the day before. Just some branches around a stump to sit on. As the light started to filter into the very dark patch of woods, I thought I saw some movement, about 50 yards away. Now in these woods, 50 yards is pretty far. I kept looking in that direction, thought I saw some movement, but not couldn't see enough to take a shot. As the light got brighter, I saw a guy sitting in a blind!! After a awhile, I started to walk out. I met the guy from the blind. We went and had breakfast together. Turned out he had seen some movement also, from me. He had entered the woods about 100 yards further down the access road - we couldn't see each others trucks due to the brush. He had entered from the other end of the road - we couldn't see each other's trucks. Both of us had not wanted to shoot unless we had a clear shot. But if either of us had gotten a little over eager or too cafinated, it would could have been a tradegy. This is the reality of hunting on public or possibly private land. You never know who is in the woods, and you are entirely dependent on not the kindness of strangers, but on their judgement. I haven't been hunting since.

I hate it but I dont see why anyone would make a brush shot. A few years ago a couple young guys got into it over a girl. Tey were best friends and one was messing around with the girl on the side. They had a falling out and a month or so later reconciling they went deer hunting. The one doing the messing got shot. The shooter was from a popular family and for the most part it wasnt questioned. I think if I was that age and messin with some ones girl I think the last thing I d do would hunt with them.

A few years before that a guy a few years younger than myself I know well shot and killed his step dad who I knew well to. The autopsy showed that the shot was from an elevated position and that the step dad had a powder burn on his cloths suggesting that it was close range. Later they changed it to a long range level shot and lost some evidence. Again it kinda went away, and the greiving process seemed to be eased by the ne car truck he drove to school after that.

this is a myth, I have heard this since I was a small boy. Always someone else was told this. pure BS urban legend. Same as the guy shooting meadowlarks thinking they were doves. Various small changes but always the same story.

Hate to burst your conspiracy theory bubble but be assured this is NOT a myth. This happened to one of my very best friends and he related it to me the same day it happened. We were both in high school at the time which goes waaaay back.

I don't question whether there may be other stories out there along the same lines, but in this case-- not a "myth".

Haven't heard the meadowlarks for doves accounts, but given the number of well documented shooting of everything from dogs, to cows, to people-- nothing surprises me any longer.

The story might be a story but people certainly are sound shooting. The two "accidents" in my county I mentioned in an earlier post were from people sound hunting. There was another shooting in the last year or so in the NC mountains were this happened as well.

Regarding people being shot when wearing blaze orange. A year or so ago a grand father went hunting with his young grandson. They saw a hunter, wearing blaze orange, sitting on a stump. The grand father told the kid to shoot. They kid said no, but the grand father insisted, so the kid shot the man sitting on the stump.

Buck Fever is real.

The more I think about this, the madder I get. I'm not a hunter but both my BILs are. I'd be afraid to be out there after hearing all these stories, getting hit with a HP rifle round would really ruin a nice day in the woods.

Having actually been shot by a shotgun I can confirm your "ruin a nice day" sentiment.

We were both teenagers hunting small game. Partridge flew up between us and he was startled enough that when he swung his gun went off spraying me with 7.5 shot on my left side. Took awhile laying on the ground there to convince myself I wasn't dead. No gaping hole or anything but did spend a couple of hours in ER while they cut out what they could find.

Didn't have much time to feel very sorry for myself as a few days later two neighbors were hunting-- one with a single shot shotgun. Similar situation in that he swung around while pulling back on the hammer and the gun went off into his friend's back killing him. Don't think it's possible to ever get over something like that.

Now you have to be careful of your pets too!!! :confused3:

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah bird hunter was shot in the buttocks after his dog stepped on a shotgun laid across the bow of a boat.

Box Elder County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Potter says the 46-year-old Brigham City man was duck hunting with a friend when he climbed out of the boat to move decoys.

Potter says the man left his 12-gauge shotgun in the boat and the dog stepped on it, causing it to fire. It wasn't clear whether the safety on the gun was on at the time.

Potter says the man was hit from about 10 feet away with 27 pellets of birdshot. He says the man wasn't seriously injured, in part because he was wearing waders. The man was treated at a nearby hospital.

Well the most dangerous time to hunt here is when it is open season on all legal sized deer. Doe permits are issued in some countys to try to control the population. I do not go on public land when all deer are legal..The wild shots increase by a large margin, I guess that would include sound shots?

Also, the most dangerous time to be out and about the woods is just before dark. I'm convinced that the vast majority of hunters are responsible and safe, but it only takes a couple of idiots to have things go wrong quickly.

We have "city people" here who come up driving their $80k SUVs, toting a $1.5k 308 magnum rifle, wearing enough outdoor gear to equip small army complete with knives and pistols... all in an attempt to slay a 90 pound whitetail. Pretty expensive meat I'd say. :confused2:

And after they've tromped through the woods all day-- laughed at by all the deer that saw them that they never saw-- they get pretty trigger happy as the day ends not having shot ANYTHING.

Just last evening I was out walking our pooch along the road at the edge of the woods (wearing his bright orange "don't shoot me I'm a dog" vest of course) when !BOOM!. The shot was very close by but I never did see anyone. Started shouting at the dog immediately to let anyone within earshot know we were out there. One never knows whether you're dealing with one of the safe hunters, or one of the idiots.

Dark is dangerous this time of year.

To our west I have heard, on two Saturdays, someone fire FOUR times in rapid succession. Both times right around dawn. Woke me up too.

Last weekend, a good hour after sunset, I heard a shot. He was well past legal hunting time, it was very dark and a light would have been required to see a deer. About 10 minutes after the first shot there was a double tap.

Later,
Dan
